Welcome to Hannum School, Home of the Bears!

From the Principal

Dear Hannum Parents and Guardians:

Welcome to a new school year!  I am so happy to be sharing this year with all of you.   This is a year of change for everyone.  There will be new friends, new teachers, and new challenges ahead.  Everyone comes to school with renewed vigor and excitement at what lies ahead.  There is nothing like the optimism that comes with the beginning of a new year.

Last school year you all said an emotional goodbye to Mary Ann Grice.  Her vision and leadership was instrumental in the success of Hannum School.  We all wish her the very best in her retirement.  She has earned it and we are grateful for the contributions she has made to our school community.  My name is Anne Marie McGovern and I am so proud to be the new principal of Hannum School.  I come to you having been a second, third and fourth grade teacher and an assistant principal.  I have worked in parochial as well as public school settings.  Educating children has been my life’s work and I am so honored to begin this important stage of my life in Oak Lawn.

We will all move through this year learning more about each other.  There is one thing about me that I would like you to know up front.  I take very seriously the responsibility of caring for your children while they are at school.  Children need to feel safe, valued and supported while they are here.  I will do everything in my power to see that the trust you place in me and my staff is never taken for granted.  The children are the reason we are all here.  I promise never to forget that.

One request that I would like to make to you is that if there is a problem, I would ask that you come talk to me about it.  Many times parents want to wait because they don’t want to be a bother.  When that happens, a small problem can balloon into a much bigger issue.  You are not bothering me.  We are truly partners in your child’s education.  Making sure your child is safe at school is my job.

I hope that registration was the first of many nights I will have to get to know you.  Please come out to the wonderful PTA events held throughout the year.  This is a great opportunity to get together with parents that value the same things you value.  We will also be having our Parent Orientation on September 6 at 7:00 pm.  This is a wonderful opportunity for you to hear from your child’s teacher about the expectations they have for your children for the upcoming year.  This is a meaningful event in which parents can hear first hand what the expectations are for your child this year.  This is a chance to begin to develop the important home-school connection.

Thank you for trusting your children to us.  We are looking forward to a very successful year.

                                                                                    Mrs. Anne Marie McGovern
