We've just completed the 1st Trimester Recycling Contest of of 2005-2006 school year! The advisory with the most recyclable items submitted was Ms. McCarthy's 7th grade class, with a total of 21 items submitted. Building-wide, a total of 118 pieces were recycled! What an awesome job! Advisory classes are already bringing in items for the 2nd Trimester, and Mrs. Moore's class is in the lead with 21 items! Each winning advisory is treated to an ice cream sundae party with all the trimmings!
Please continue to save and bring items from home, as we continue this important effort. Students may save items over the summer and submit them in the fall for the next contest. If you choose, we can provide you with prepaid mailing pouches and you can mail the inkjets from home; OLHMS will still receive credit for your efforts. If you would like a supply of mailers, please email me.
Did you know that some of the components in cell phones and laser cartridges are toxic? When these items are landfilled, the components can leach into the soil and water and contaminate the environment. Easy recycling of empty laser cartridges reduces landfill waste by an average of 4 pounds for every cartridge that is recycled. (from http://www.ncr.com/products/supplies/laser_cartridges.htm) By recycling, we help to reuse these items instead of running the risk of hurting our environment. Here's another piece of powerful information: According to www.advantagecartridge.com, it takes 260 years for one cartridge to biodegrade!! We've saved over 200 pounds of landfill waste by our efforts over just 1 year! Keep up the great work!
OLHMS also hopes to expand our recycling program to include paper, newspaper, magazines, etc. after our new building opens.
Help save the environment one
cartridge at a time!
