A SYNOPSIS OF WHAT HAPPENED AT THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE
OAK LAWN-HOMETOWN SCHOOL DISTRICT 123 BOARD OF EDUCATION.

 

The closed session convened at 7:00 p.m. Open session was held in the Training Center and called to order at 7:30 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was said.

Special Presentation - 2002 Summer School Recap - Patrick Adams

Discussion of 3rd Draft of the 2002-2003 budget

THE BOARD HEARD FROM THE ADMINISTRATION REGARDING:

• Building and Grounds Report
• Ventilation replacement and asbestos removal work at Gaddis - the bids came in much higher than expected, so the architects are recommending that the projects be postponed
• The two proposed Resolutions for the November 5, 2002 election
• Apple Calendar 2002-2003 - Mrs. Gloodt was acknowledged for her efforts
• Engaged Learning Conference, June, 2002 dealing with research-based instructional strategies which support student achievement
• Personnel/Staffing update 2002-2003
• Registration update - registration went well, but there were a few residency problems
• New Teacher Orientation, August 21, 2002
• Mentoring Program - will consider developing a "teacher induction" program
• Reading Recovery update - Mrs. Wiora is the new teacher leader/trainer
• 2002-2003 Professional Development Calendar
• Revision of Curriculum Renewal Plan, 2002-2007, Science will be the next core curricular area for review instead of Language Arts
• Administrative Program Responsibilities/Evaluations
• Handwriting Program - the Bowmar/Noble handwriting program from McGraw-Hill has been purchased for grades K-4
• K-2 Literacy Initiative - on March 10, 2003, Michael Ford is coming to District 123
• Operation K-IDs - a joint program sponsored by the Oak Lawn Police Department and the Village of Oak Lawn
• Dr. Paziotopoulos was very pleased with the 8/23 Institute Day; he sensed a real connection among the staff members present.

THE BOARD TOOK THE FOLLOWING ACTION:

• Approved the minutes of June 24 and August 12, 2002
• Approved the closed session minutes of June 24, 2002
• Approved the resignations of Karen Adent, Eveleen B. Autrey, Kimberly Gorak, Lois Oman, and Julie Safranski
• Approved the employment of

Ciraulo, Joy - Social worker at Sward School
Doran, Mary - Math/Block teacher at McGugan Junior High School
Ellingsen, Barbara - General Music teacher at Hannum School

Khoury, Carol - Science teacher at the Science & Environmental Center

• Adopted resolution providing for and requiring the submission of the proposition of increasing the existing tax rate for educational purposes (a 65¢ rate increase from the current $2.20 to $2.85) to the voters of School District Number 123, Cook County, Illinois, at the general election to be held on the 5th day of November, 2002
• Adopted resolution providing for and requiring the submission of the proposition of issuing School Building Bonds in the amount of $25,006,420 to the voters of School District Number 123, Cook County, Illinois, at the general election to be held on the 5th day of November, 2002
• Approved IRS Section 457 Code Revisions
• Failed to approve the bid for 2002 Ventilation Replacement and Asbestos Removal work at Gaddis School due to the greater than expected costs
• Approved application for Closing the Gap ISBE Technology Grant Program
• Approved the FY '03 AERO Special Education Cooperative annual budget
• Approved the list of bills as presented, the Fund Reconciliation Report, the summary financial reports, and the payroll in the amount of $802,376.75 and $858,355.41.

The meeting adjourned at 8:50 p.m.

The next regular meeting of the Board of Education will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, September 23, 2002 at the Administration Center, 4201 West 93rd Street, Oak Lawn, Illinois.
