A SYNOPSIS OF WHAT HAPPENED AT THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE
OAK LAWN-HOMETOWN SCHOOL DISTRICT 123 BOARD OF EDUCATION.

 

The closed session convened at 7:15 p.m. Open session was held in the Training Center and called to order at 7:40 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was said.

A Public Hearing was conducted on the 2002-2003 budget.

THE BOARD HEARD FROM THE ADMINISTRATION REGARDING:

• Building and Grounds Report
• Oak Lawn Baseball bill for work on fields - Dist. 123 will do a co-pay
• First Fun Fair 2003 meeting, Thursday, October 3, 2002 in the Old Board Room at District Office at 6:00 p.m.
• 2001-2002 Audit, Single Audit, and Management Letter
• Network 21, a coalition of education, business, labor, and civic organizations interested in reforming Illinois' school finance system
• September 11th commemorations at the schools
• Staffing Plan for 2002-2003/Vacancies
• Review of class sizes/recommendations
• INSPRA Award -- Mrs. Lori Gloodt, principal of Sward School, has been named as a winner in the 2002 Publications Contest sponsored by the Illinois Chapter/National School Public Relations Association for her work on the 2001-2002 Apple Calendar and Handbook.
• Handwriting program
• Staff development plans -- September 16 and 30
• Records Committee 2002-2003
• Mentoring program update
• Open House/Curriculum Night updates
• September Lane Changes - 29 teachers
Dr. Paziotopoulos was very pleased to report that ten more teachers have received their master's degrees. Including these latest lane changes, we have approximately 46% of our teaching staff now holding MA degrees. Moreover, there are approximately 35 teachers currently in the Governors State University MA cohort programs.
• Referendum Update for the November 5, 2002 ballot
QUESTION #1
Seeking approval to issue $25 million dollars in bonds to construct a new upper grade center to house one thousand 6-7-8 grade students; and to build two gymnasiums/auditoriums -- one for Kolmar and the other for Hannum School.
QUESTION #2
Asking for a sixty-five cent (65¢) rate increase in our Education Fund.
Current rate is 2.20 --- new rate would be 2.85
Dr. Paziotopoulos gave a status report on action taken so far in support of the referendums: The first Political Action Committee (PAC) meeting was scheduled for Tuesday, September 24, at 7:00 p.m.

THE BOARD TOOK THE FOLLOWING ACTION:

• Approved the minutes of August 26, 2002
• Approved the closed session minutes of August 26, 2002
• Approved the employment of Certified Auxiliary Teachers:
Berry, Erin - Aux. Teacher for collaboration at McGugan and Covington
Ciciora, Irene - Aux. Teacher for collaboration at Covington, Hannum, and Hometown
Martin, Kathleen - Aux. Teacher for collaboration at McGugan, Kolmar and Sward
• Approved the employment of educational support personnel, 2002-2003
Malfeo, Rosalind - Instructional Assistant in the Special Education Program at McGugan Junior High
Mathias, Tracy - Instructional Assistant in the Special Education Program at McGugan Junior High
• Approved the 2002-2003 Application for Recognition of Schools
• Approved the FY 2002-2003 Budget
• Accepted the FY 2001-2002 Audit, Single Audit, and Management Letter from FPT&W certified public accountants
• Approved the list of bills as presented, the Fund Reconciliation Report, the summary financial reports, and the payroll in the amount of $1,421,066.81.

The meeting adjourned at 8:50 p.m.

The next regular meeting of the Board of Education will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, October 28, 2002 at the Administration Center, 4201 West 93rd Street, Oak Lawn, Illinois.
