A SYNOPSIS OF WHAT HAPPENED AT THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE
OAK LAWN-HOMETOWN SCHOOL DISTRICT 123 BOARD OF EDUCATION.

Open session was held in the Training Center and called to order at 7:30 p.m.

The Pledge of Allegiance was said.

Special Presentation - Standards-based Math Curriculum

Lori Gloodt & Sheila Lettiere

Mrs. Gloodt and Mrs. Lettiere outlined a new math curriculum design to be implemented for the 2003-2004 school year. Guided by the research of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, there will be a shift to a more depth and less breadth approach.

Special Presentation - Gymnasium Configurations &

Information About Upper Grade Center

Andrew McCall

Mr. Andrew McCall presented various gymnasium designs, site impacts for Hannum and Kolmar Schools, and ideas for the proposed Upper Grade Center. Concept 3 is in the process of reviewing the initial written staff input regarding plans for the new building.

THE BOARD HEARD FROM THE ADMINISTRATION REGARDING:

• Building and Grounds Report
• Insurance coverage - Covington flood
• Fun Fair - February 22, 2003 at Oak Lawn High School from 11-3 pm
• The Oak Lawn Story - Books can be purchased at all schools and D.O. for $33.95. To date, we have sold 135 books.
• Thanks to Mrs. Gloodt and Mrs. Lettiere for the Math Presentation, their leadership and hard work on the math curriculum.
• Plans for January 27 half-day inservice
- math curriculum inservice
- new instructional design model for proposed Upper Grade Center
• Personnel update
• Increase instructional aide position (1) for the PTP program
• Science Center Open House (1/14) was a wonderful success - Tammie Souza from Channel 5 was in attendance
• Thanks to Denise Woloszyn and her hard work, District 123 has been awarded $56,522 as part of the Closing the Gap technology grant. Denise is working on obtaining a shorter domain name for our district (perhaps d123.org ??)
• District 123 Book Club for Teachers -- Wings
• "Demonstration Classroom for Guided Reading" - Gerry Krull, 1st gr. @ Sward
• TPI School Enrollments for 2003-2004
• Title III Grant Application
• Governors State University Cohort Programs -- the administration is pursuing plans with GSU for one more Curriculum and Instruction cohort - with a cap of 25 teachers. This will be the only MA cohort sponsored by the District for the next two years.
• Choral Festival (3/12/03) -- official change of venue from Covington School to Oak Lawn High School
• Dr. Paziotopoulos discussed various aspects of the Referendum
- Training - Deputy Voter Registrars (1/15)
- PAC steering committee meeting (1/16)
- PAC meeting dates: 2/6, 2/27, 3/13, 3/20, and 3/27
- Forum dates: 3/11 at Hometown and 3/18 at Kolmar
- Staff visitations - Dr. Paziotopoulos & Mrs. McCord
If the tax rate referendum fails on April 1, 2003, the administration must reduce the budget by $2.2 million.
• School Board election - Five candidates have filed for three positions

THE BOARD TOOK THE FOLLOWING ACTION:

• Approved the minutes of December 16, 2002
• Approved the closed session minutes of December 16, 2002
• Authorized release of the closed session minutes of May 28, 2002 to the public; and that the closed session minutes of June 24, 2002, August 26, 2002, September 23, 2002, October 28, 2002, and November 25, 2002 remain closed.
• Approved the employment of educational support personnel, 2002-2003
Daher, Joselyn - Auxiliary Teacher Substitute at Covington School
Kohler, Lori - Instructional Assistant in the EC Program at Kolmar School
Murphy, Karen - Instructional Assistant in Kindergarten at Covington School
• Approved the resignation of Carrie Hoban
• Adopted resolution providing for and requiring the submission of the proposition of increasing the existing tax rate for educational purposes to the voters of School District Number 123, Cook County, Illinois, at the general election to be held on the 1st day of April, 2003 (an increase of 65¢ -- from the current $2.20 to $2.85)
• Approved bid meeting specifications for the 2003 Ventilation Replacement Work at Gaddis School (also McGugan & Hometown Schools) in the amount of $226,500
• Approved bid meeting specifications for the 2003 Asbestos Abatement Work at Gaddis School in the amount of $10,300
• Approved rental of available classrooms at Hometown School for the A.E.R.O. Special Education Cooperative 2003 Summer School Program
• Approved the list of bills as presented, the Fund Reconciliation Report, the summary financial reports, and the payroll in the amount of $2,185,158.10
 
The meeting adjourned at 10:00 p.m.
 
The next regular meeting of the Board of Education will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, February 24, 2003 at the Administration Center, 4201 West 93rd Street, Oak Lawn, Illinois.
