A SYNOPSIS OF WHAT HAPPENED AT THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE
OAK LAWN-HOMETOWN SCHOOL DISTRICT 123 BOARD OF EDUCATION.

Open session was held in the Training Center and called to order at 7:30 p.m.

The Pledge of Allegiance was said.

Special Presentations - Reading Recovery/Title I

Peg Wiora, Marie Urso

Peg Wiora discussed the "Core Professional Document for the Implementation of One Component of a Balanced Literacy Program: Guided Reading" and presented a video demonstrating how Guided Reading lessons are conducted in our classrooms. She talked about various aspects of the Reading Recovery program. Marie Urso added to the RR discussion by giving background information( RR started in 1993-94 ) and a statistical report regarding the success of the program.

French Club Trip - Montreal

Joseph Mann, NEWS Travel

Mr. Mann briefly outlined the French Club trip to Quebec, Canada from April 16-23, 2003. There will be 36 students and 7 chaperones traveling to Canada.

THE BOARD HEARD FROM THE ADMINISTRATION REGARDING:

• Buildings and Grounds Report
• Lease agreements with Christ Hospital and Oak Lawn Baseball
• Transportation bid - Laidlaw representatives were present and challenged the low bid from Illinois School
• District 123 has been placed on the state's financial WATCH list
• School Calendar, 2003-2004
• Staffing plan development for 2003-2004
• Inservice recap - 3/10
• EDC Committee update
• Inservice plans - 3/24
• Inservice plans - 4/1
• ISAT testing begins April 2, 2003
• Quality School Portfolio (QSP)-- ISAT data disaggregation tool
• Kiwanis tournament
• District Choral Festival recap - 3/12/03

- final phase of campaign
• Pearle Vision Proposal - the Pearle Community Partners Program would provide a 35% discount for eyeglasses to #123 employees and include a provision whereby student/s could receive one free pair of eyeglasses
• Middle School candidate interviews
Tabled - Low Bid meeting specifications for Student Transportation Services

THE BOARD TOOK THE FOLLOWING ACTION:

• Approved the minutes of February 24, 2003
• Approved resignations from Carol Colonnelli, Margaret Eber, Julie Massaro, and Heidi Rapinchuk at the conclusion of the 2002-2003 school year
• Approved the Pearle Vision Proposal
• Approved the 2003-2004 school calendar
• Adopted Resolution For Participation in State of Illinois Federal Surplus Property Program
• Approved rental agreement with Advocate Health and Hospitals Corp., d.b.a Advocate Christ Medical Center for Rental of a Portion of Gaddis School
• Approved one year agreement with Oak Baseball for use of District 123 fields.
• Approved the list of bills as presented, the Fund Reconciliation Report, the summary financial reports, and the payroll in the amount of $1,118,139.96

The meeting adjourned at 9:45 p.m.

The next meeting of the Board of Education will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, April 7, 2003 at the Administration Center, 4201 West 93rd Street, Oak Lawn, Illinois. This will be a special reorganizational meeting.
