A SYNOPSIS OF WHAT HAPPENED AT THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE
OAK LAWN-HOMETOWN SCHOOL DISTRICT 123 BOARD OF
EDUCATION.
The closed session convened at 6:30 p.m. Open
session was held in the Training Center and called to order at 7:38
p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was said.
THE BOARD HEARD FROM THE
ADMINISTRATION REGARDING:
- Buildings and Grounds
Report
- - Gasteyer, a new roof was being
installed
- - Brandt/Science Center, electrical problems
were noted
- - bid opening for Kolmar and Hannum gyms
scheduled for 4/10/03
- Tentative groundbreaking for the new
middle school is scheduled for October or November, 2003 with
occupancy scheduled for the beginning of the 2005 school year.
- Early Childhood program, 2003-2004
- Due to significant increase in enrollment, an
increase in staffing is being considered -- half-time (.50)
teacher and one full-time (1.00) aide
- Referendum remarks
- Dr. Paziotopoulos thanked everyone who
volunteered to secure the successful passage of the education tax
rate referendum on April 1, 2003.
- Canvass of the Election - April 1, 2003
- School Board Members
- The votes for the election held on April 1,
2003, were canvassed by the board. Total votes received for school
board membership were as follows: Mary Grana - 4,184, Nancy Karr -
3,995, Alan Stepp - 2,826, Jean Doeslaere-Coffelt - 2,074, Alan
White - 2,650.
- The board approved the tally as set forth and
declared Mary Grana, Nancy Karr, and Alan Stepp elected members of
the Board of Education for full 4-year terms.
- Tax Rate Referendum - 65¢ Increase,
Passed
- The board approved the canvass of votes and
declared the result -- and the successful passage -- of the
Education Tax Rate Referendum, as follows:
- Referendum YES No
- Education Tax Rate 3,820 2,721
- Mr. White was acknowledged for his years of
service as a board member (1999-2003). Dr. Paziotopoulos and Mr.
Boyle paid tribute to Mr. White with personal reflections and Mr.
White expressed his appreciation in his farewell remarks. Mr.
Boyle administered the oath of office to Mrs. Grana, Mrs. Karr,
and Mr. Stepp and the new board was seated. The election of
officers was conducted as follows:

- Vice President Rich Smith
- Secretary Jim Craig
THE BOARD TOOK THE FOLLOWING
ACTION:
- Approved the minutes of March 24,
2003
- Rejected all student transportation
bids previously received and publicly opened on February 28, 2003
and authorized the solicitation of new bids
- Approved the reappointment of Concept 3
as District 123 architects
- Established the regular meetings of the
Board of Education on the fourth Monday of each month from 7:30
p.m. to 10:00 p.m., or earlier. Closed sessions will be conducted
between 6:00 and 7:30 p.m.
- Approved the regular board meeting
dates from April, 2003 to March 2005
- Approved the retirement of Donna
Hammonds, secretary at Covington School, effective June 13,
2003
- Accepted the resignation of Kathleen
Raddatz, Wings teacher, at the conclusion of the 2002-2003 school
year
- Adopted a resolution authorizing notice
of non-renewal of employment (first, second, or third year
probationary teachers)
- Adopted a resolution honorably
dismissing educational support personnel
- Reappointed the law firm of Sraga and
Engler, L.L.C. as District 123 legal counsel
- Reappointed the law firm of Scariano,
Himes, and Petrarca as District 123 legal counsel - with
limitations
- Appointed Ms. Andrea Anderson as
principal of McGugan Junior High School -- soon to be a new middle
school at the Gasteyer site - for the 2003-2004 school
year

- The meeting adjourned at 8:45 p.m.

- The next meeting of the Board of Education
will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, April 28, 2003 at the
Administration Center, 4201 West 93rd Street, Oak Lawn, Illinois.
