A SYNOPSIS OF WHAT HAPPENED AT THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE
OAK LAWN-HOMETOWN SCHOOL DISTRICT 123 BOARD OF EDUCATION.
 
The closed session convened at 6:30 p.m. Open session was held in the Training Center and called to order at 7:35 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was said.
Special Presentation - Construction Update

Andrew McCall, Concept 3 Architects 

Mr. McCall distributed the latest computer generated drawing of the new middle school and a time schedule.

Prime Bid opening (2-10) October 9, 2003

General Bid opening (1) October 16

Architect's recommendation & Board approval October 27

Ground Breaking November 10

Work continues through ... June 15, 2005

He displayed various sample building materials, such as chocolate colored bricks (main color of the new middle school), beige bricks (accent color), a pre-manufactured concrete (base -- 3' up from the ground), and EIFS, a stucco-like material that will start 16' off the ground.

The board briefly discussed the name of the new middle school. The administration suggested Oak Lawn-Hometown Middle School - a name that will represent both communities and collectively bring pride to the community. The board will make a decision at a later date.

THE BOARD HEARD FROM THE ADMINISTRATION REGARDING:

• Buildings and Grounds report
• Construction update - Hannum & Kolmar gymnasiums
• Criminal background checks v. fingerprinting
Fingerprinting of new employees will not be conducted at the present time.
• First Fun Fair meeting, Thurs. 9/25/03 at 4:00 p.m. at District Office.
The Fun Fair is scheduled for Saturday, 2/21/04, at Oak Lawn High School.
• Medallion before and after school child care update
Surprisingly, to date there has been low interest in the program.
• Oak Lawn Baseball's request for an additional baseball field at Covington
• SCOPE finance meeting
With the tax referenda and the triennial reassessment, most District 123 residents realized a 4%-22% real estate tax increase. The EAV for our district increased 18.35% over last year.

• Current vacancies/hiring update
• Administrative assignments for program development (revised)
• TPI program update
• Everyday Math update - transition has been somewhat challenging

• Technology update
• Worth Township - Volleyball league for 4th graders was approved

• Lane Changes - 40 teachers
Dr. Paziotopoulos was pleased to report that, including these latest lane changes, we now have approximately 70% of our teaching staff holding MA degrees!
• NHS Richard's High School - of the 42 inductees, 16 were former 123 students
• Vision exam - new law
• ISAT results will be discussed at the Oct. meeting
Public Hearing
A public hearing of the FY 2003-2004 Budget was conducted.

THE BOARD TOOK THE FOLLOWING ACTION:

• Approved the minutes of August 25, 2003
• Approved the closed session minutes of August 25, 2003
• Approved the employment of the following certified staff, 2003-04:
Miller, Melissa - School Psychologist
Weber, Jill - Librarian at Kolmar School
Certified Auxiliary Teachers
Becker, Jody - at Hannum
Fajman, Elizabeth - for collaboration at Hannum, Hometown, and Sward
Gaspar, Rachel - at Kolmar
Pitcher, Abigail - at Sward
Razik, Lisa - for collaboration at Covington, Kolmar, and McGugan
• Approved the employment of the following educational support personnel, 03-04
Fenton, Janet - Instructional Assistant in the sp ed resource program at Kolmar
Joyce-Sweeney, Jeriann - School Nurse at Covington School
Mathias, Tracy - Instructional Assistant in the TPI program at Hannum
Siska, Mary - Library/Instructional aide at McGugan
• Approved the 2003-2004 Application for Recognition of Schools
• Approved the FY 2003-2004 Budget
• Approved the list of bills as presented, the Fund Reconciliation Report, the summary financial reports, and the payroll in the amount of $2,303,736.35

The meeting adjourned at 9:30 p.m.

The next regular meeting of the Board of Education will be held on Monday, October 27, 2003, at the Administration Center, 4201 West 93rd Street, Oak Lawn, Illinois.
