A SYNOPSIS OF WHAT HAPPENED AT THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE
OAK LAWN-HOMETOWN SCHOOL DISTRICT 123 BOARD OF EDUCATION.
The open meeting was held at the Oak Lawn-Hometown Middle School (OLHMS) Cafetorium and called to order at 7:30 p.m.
Special Presentations -
Oak Lawn Children’s Museum Penny Drive
Presenter: Robert Smith, retired Police Chief of Oak Lawn
Robert Smith and his son, Adam, made a donation of a special penny worth approximately $3,000 to Adam Woodworth, Director of the Oak Lawn Children's Museum, in support of the museum's first annual Penny Drive
Oak Lawn Rotary Club - Dictionaries for Third Graders
Presenter: Kathy Kobak, President
Kathy Kobak and Jeanine Shotas highlighted the Rotary Dictionary Project which will provide a gift of a personal dictionary to all third grade students in District 123. Representatives of the Rotary will deliver the dictionaries to the schools within a few days.
THE BOARD HEARD FROM THE ADMINISTRATION REGARDING:
- Mrs. Calabrese delivered a power point presentation developed by PMA Financial Network, Inc. that outlined a 5-year forecast for the district’s finances. Data elements included five years of audited financial reports, tax levy/extensions, EAV, maximum tax rates, student enrollment, student/teacher ratios, and salary and benefits. Charts and graphs illustrated revenue v. expenditures analysis, projected year-end fund balances, ISBE financial profile score, etc. Expenditures for 2006-07 are projected at almost $29 M.
- Annual Audit 2006
- Preliminary Tax Levy 2006
- Two "new" areas of concern involving traffic on Southwest Highway that qualify as serious traffic safety hazards
- Honeywell Instant Alert - Implementation is ongoing of this new communication system that provides emergency and routine communications to parents and staff.
- Distant Horizon proposal for District 123 website development services
- Buildings and Grounds Report, including the impact on our buildings as a result of the recent storm
- Construction update at Brandt and future structural needs district-wide
- District 123 has worked with Radio Communications and Beyond, Inc. to develop one common UHF radio communication system as part of the Emergency Response Crisis Management Grant. A new radio antenna tower will be installed to provide optimum radio coverage for the district.
- ISAT 2006 results have been delayed
- Just5Clicks assessment data organization software
- Hazardous materials and lockdown emergency drills will be conducted at all schools before November 1, 2006.
- Grade level meetings were recently conducted in guided reading and materials management for the new Harcourt reading program.
- School safety update in light of the recent incidents of unauthorized school entry of a suspicious person. The Oak Lawn Police Department held a meeting on 10/20/06 to discuss general procedures regarding incidents of this type.
- District 123 has, once again, received the SchoolSearch Bright Red Apple Award for educational excellence for 2006.
- Teacher Tuition Reimbursement
- Intergovernmental Agreement with the Village of Oak Lawn (revised)
- Adoption of the revised Board Policy Manual
- District #229 referendum informational flyer
- The flexibility of the PMA program was noted as a valuable tool to aid the upcoming Financial Committee.
- Mrs. McCord complimented Mrs. Haddick on her successful completion of the Chicago Marathon.
THE BOARD TOOK THE FOLLOWING ACTION:
- Approved the minutes of September 25, 2006
- Approved the retirement of, L. Weszely, RN, in June 2007
- Approved the resignation, M. Monet, Instructional Aide, effective 10/5/06
- Approved the employment of certified staff, 2006-07 Occupational Therapist Contract - M. O’Brien
- Approved the employment of educational support personnel, 2006-07

- Approved the 2007 School Library Per Capita Grant Application for Oak Lawn- Hometown District 123
- Adopted the preliminary 2006 Tax Levy
- Approved the serious safety hazards for children being transported within School District 123 boundaries (two new additions
- Accepted the FY 2005-2006 Audit Report
- Adopted the revised School Board Policy Manual
- Approved the proposal from Distant Horizon for website development
- Approved the list of bills as presented, the Fund Reconciliation Report,the summary financial reports, and the payroll in the amount of $2,253,755.46
The meeting was adjourned at 8:40 p.m.
