At Covington Elementary School, we believe that the educational experience extends well beyond the classroom. For this reason, we have developed an extracurricular program that provides opportunities for our students to become more involved in their school. Through these activities, we hope that our children will develop an expectation for themselves that they will be highly involved in their school and their communities. Most importantly, we also hope they will have a lot of fun. While many activities are solely for the older students in the fourth and fifth grades, occasionally, there are opportunities for younger students to also become involved. In 2007-2008, our opportunities included:
Art Club 5 th Grade Sponsored by: Mrs. Cusack
The art club is a group of students who simply love to be artists. They receive the opportunity to work on special projects throughout the school, or on techniques different from those experienced in the regular art classes. Art club meets weekly after school.
Band 5 th Grade Sponsored by: Ms. Lyons
The Covington band members are actually part of the much larger and extremely exciting Oak Lawn-Hometown Middle School band program. Whole band practices occur weekly before school, with group lessons taking place weekly during the school day. 5 th grade students participate in this program, but receive an opportunity to try different instruments at the end of the 4 th grade year.
Chess Club 5 th Grade Sponsored by: Mrs. Boss
The chess club meets weekly to enjoy the game and practice their skills. Toward the end of the year, a tournament is conducted to allow students an opportunity to practice the game competitively.
Chorus 4 th and 5 th Grades Sponsored by: Mrs. Glikis
Chorus members sing and entertain our students, parents, and community through a number of activities throughout the year. Santa on the Green in Oak Lawn, Covington’s Winter/Holiday Program, District 123 Chorus Festival, and performing at a local nursing home are just some of the activities in which chorus students participate. Any student in the 4 th and 5 th grade may participate. All that is required is a love of music and a willingness to share with others. Practices generally occur twice per week during recess.
Computer Club 4 th Grade Sponsored by: Mrs. Queen
The computer club meets weekly after school and is open only to 4 th grade students. This club has the opportunity to explore topics and applications that are geared for “healthy computer fun,” and that may not be able to be explored during class time.
Culture Club 3 rd- 5 th Grades Sponsored by: Ms. Keiner
The Culture Club is a group of students who get together after school to plan activities that help the whole school celebrate what it means to be an American, as well as to celebrate the vast array of cultures that comprise our American population.
K-Kids 5 th Grade Sponsored by: Mrs. Ford & Ms.Hellman
K-Kids is a community service group that works through the Kiwanis Club of Oak Lawn. The students participate in a variety of fund raising activities and help promote school spirit throughout the year. This group is open to 5 th grade students.
Oak Lawn Park District Athletic & Activity Groups Various Grade Levels
Throughout the year, the Oak Lawn Park District offers different activities and sports to the children of the Covington community. These groups are announced through the school, through local news media, and through park district publications. These activities are intended to supplement those offered by the school and to allow children the opportunity to have a wider variety of opportunities.
Safety Patrol 5 th Grade Sponsored by: Mr. Van Huisen
The Safety Patrol works with the Oak Lawn Police Department crossing guards to ensure that students and parents are watchful and safe as they arrive to and leave school each day. The patrols also lead by example as they demonstrate the appropriate way to follow the rules and ensure that they remain safe.
Scouting, Including Brownies and Cub Scouts Various Grade Levels
Scouting opportunities are available through various local councils. These groups typically visit the classrooms of eligible students early in the year to provide information and conduct registration. Scout groups may meet on school grounds, or elsewhere on various evenings throughout the year.
Skit Club 5 th Grade Sponsored by: Ms. Selmeister
The Skit Club is for 5 th grade students who are budding actors. They create and perform their skits during an after school club designed for them to let their acting juices flow.
Social Studies Club 5 th Grade Sponsored by: Ms. Razik
The Social Studies Club is a group of 5 th grade students who have an interest in history, government and community. They participate in a variety of activities designed both to be fun and to explore topics beyond what may be possible in the classroom.
Ultimate Sports Club 5 th Grade Sponsored by: Mr. Van Huisen & Mr. Dare
The Ultimate Sports Club meets weekly before school to give club members a chance to compete in a variety of sports for which there may not be time during P.E. class.
Yearbook Club 5 th Grade Sponsored by: Mrs. McAuliffe
Members of the yearbook club assist the yearbook advisor with the preparation of the proofs for the annual yearbook. They are partially responsible for the final product containing memories that last a lifetime.
