School Regulations
The School Day
The school day begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 3:20 p.m. Certain activities at the middle school
take place before the start of the regular day. Those activities begin at 7:35 a.m. Half day kindergarten
classes meet from 8:30 a.m. - 11:50 a.m.
Early Arrivals
Children are not expected to arrive at school more than
ten minutes before the bell rings. The faculty can assume
no responsibility for supervision of children who come too
early in the morning. Children who are transported by bus
will be given special consideration because bus schedules
cannot fit these limitations.
Attendance
By law, children between the ages of 7 and 16 must attend school. The law requires parents to
keep their children in school on a regular basis. For more information about the District’s
attendance policy, please review Board policies. The District rules regarding attendance and
related topics can be found in the Discipline Policy Handbook.
Absence
Valid reasons for student absences are illness or death in
the immediate family. Parents must call the child’s school
each day of an absence before 8:30 a.m. and inform the
school of the reason for absence. Failure to comply with
this notification will result in a call being made by the school
to verify the student absence within two hours of the beginning
of the day as required by state law.
Required Excuses
A written excuse is necessary when a child returns to
school after any absence. All excuses should give the reason
for the absence and should be signed by a parent
unless the school has been notified that another signature
is to be accepted.
In cases of excessive tardiness, an explanatory note may
be required each time the pupil is tardy.
Special dismissal during school hours should be avoided
if at all possible. When absolutely necessary, please send
a note stating the time and the reason for the special dismissal.
No student will be released from school for part of
a day unless the parent/guardian signs out the student at
the school office.
Visitors
We welcome all adults interested in observing our educational
program. However, all schools are electronically
monitored for our students’ safety and security. We would
appreciate having the following rules observed at all
times in order to ensure a safe environment for our students
and staff.
- All visitors shall report to the school office upon entering
the building where they will sign in, show photo
I.D., and receive a visitors tag. Upon leaving the school
visitors are to return to the office and sign out.
Entrance will be restricted to one location, generally
the main entrance.
- Parents wishing to visit an individual teacher are
requested to make prior arrangements with that
teacher or the principal.
- Other adults interested in observing classes should
contact the principal of the building.
- Non-enrolled children will not be permitted to visit
school unless they have been given prior approval by
the principal.
Student Appearance
Students are expected to be dressed and groomed in a
manner which is appropriate and acceptable for their age
level. Appropriate dress and grooming are conducive of a
positive learning environment.
Lunch Recess
Principals decide whether to schedule
indoor or outdoor recess. Parents may
request, in writing, indoor recess for their
child after an illness, but not for more than
one school day. If a child must stay indoors
for a longer period, parents must furnish a
note from the child’s physician.
Illinois Textbook Loan Program
The State of Illinois provides, under the
Illinois Secular Textbook Program, the loan of
textbooks to any public or private school student
enrolled in grades kindergarten through
12. The State reimburses participating school
districts for the cost of one textbook per student
within a given school year. Our district
applies for these funds every year that this
program is offered. The funds are contingent
upon the supply of money allocated by the
state legislature for the program. Moreover,
each year, the legislature determines what
grade levels will be funded.
To fulfill our state obligation in receiving
these funds, we must apprise you of this program.
Note: This program has no effect on
students receiving textbooks since every
student is supplied with the textbooks s/he
needs through the District’s textbook rental
program.
Medications
District 123’s Board of Education has
adopted a medication policy which requires
a medication authorization form to be completed
by the physician and parent. Please
contact the school nurse regarding this form.
Only those medications necessary to the
health and well-being of a student and which
must be given during school hours may be
administered to a student. ALL medications
given to students must be prescribed by a
licensed prescriber on an individual basis.
A written order for prescription and nonprescription
medications must be completed
in its entirety and filed with the school nurse
before any medications will be administered.
All medications are to be kept in the school
nurse’s office.
For more information about the District’s
policy regarding administering medications
to students, please review Board policy.
Student Injuries
In the event that a student is injured in
such a way as to limit physical activity, the
parent shall be required to file a physician’s
note with the school nurse explaining the
nature of the injury and the duration for the
reduction of activity. Students will be given
alternate, related assignments in gym class
and will be given indoor recess for the duration
of the injury.
