This unit was developed as part of the Oak Lawn-Hometown School District #123 Technology Mini Grant Engaged Learning Project.
This is a Reading/Language Arts and Science unit for second grade students. It is intended to introduce friendly letter writing skills as well as state writing requirements. The students will gather information about a dinosaur, compose a letter, and mail it to their grandparents.

Recognize the various parts of a friendly letter. Compose a friendly letter to be mailed. Recognize proper envelope addressing skills.
Implementation Overview
This mini unit was designed to take three class
periods. During the first lesson the students will work
in groups of two, while visiting the web sites
in the computer lab. The second will be a meeting with the teacher to go
over a scratch copy of their letter. They will rewrite a final copy and
mail the letter during the third lesson.
Resources Needed
Computer printer paper, pencils, envelopes, stamps,
journal.
Grandparents' addresses for all students.
Access to on IMac computer, and one printer.

Entry Level Skills and Knowledge
The children need to have basic computer skills.
This is an introductory lesson so no prior knowledge of letter writing
is reguired. By printing and filling out the Friendly Letter Template available,
the children will be able to complete a finished product.
The teacher can evaluate students writing process by meeting with the student and proof reading the scratch copy.
Enrichment Activity
The
student will visit and participate at the site Dino Master Quest.
Conclusion
The activities in this unit will provide the children
with an opportunity to learn about letter writing using their writing skills
and technology.
