Overview: Students will participate in an on-line adventure of their neighborhood and surrounding neighborhoods.
Purpose: Students will explore their own neighborhood area to make observations and discuss their findings.
Objectives: To explore our neighborhood through a satellite.
Resources and Materials: Social studies text book, Block Buddy Atlas pages 4 - 7.
Internet Address: Download Google Earth (free download).
Activities:
1. Read and discuss pages 4-7 in the social studies text book.
2. Open Google Earth.
3. Explain to the students that they will be exploring their own neighborhood through a satellite image via Google Earth.
4. Type in the area that you would like to see. Example: Illinois - Then it will fly to the state of Illinois. Then you can narrow your search to Oak Lawn or even your own school.
5. Begin to search for different sights on Google Earth. Example: Oak Lawn Library, Children’s Museum, Zoo, etc.
6. Ask students to participate with their own observations.
7. Follow up with a neighborhood worksheet or a writing activity that explains what they saw!
Evaluation: Teacher observation of student participation within the class setting.
