Use one of the following websites for a “bell ringer”, “opening activity”, or “sponge activity” to start your class. These top four sites can also be used for daily classroom lessons. If you are looking to integrate technology into your classroom, start with these sites.

This site contains a “Place of the Week” with facts, a photo gallery, and other information. There is also a daily news section, featured videos, and a section just for kids. Educators can download classroom resources, lesson plans, and activities.

This site contains news summaries, a daily news quiz, word of the day, and test prep question for the day. There is also a teacher connection section with daily lesson plans, a lesson plan archive, news snapshot, and much more.
A Word a Day http://www.wordsmith.org/awad/
This site provides you with a vocabulary word for the day. When you click on “today’s word” you can listen to the word, read how to use it in a sentence with an example. You can also have the word of the day emailed to you each morning. These are higher level vocabulary words used for upper grades.
This Day in History http://www.historychannel.com/tdih
This site lists everything that happened on this day in history. It has a general interest category and other categories such as wars, automotive, crime, and disasters. Entertainment, literary, presidential and wall street are other possible categories to explore.
