Curriculum Mini-Lessons

Title: Theme 4 Harcourt Mini-Lab Interactive Activities
Subject: Reading
Grade Level: 5

Overview: Can be utilized as a center activity, or as a culminating review

Objectives: Students will apply their knowledge of the focus skills and strategies learned throughout Harcourt, Theme 4 Express Yourself and share ideas through an interactive hotlist including reading and grammar games.

Resources and Materials: Hotlist, mini-lab, and Theme 4 "Express Yourself Checklist"

Activities: This was used primarily for a center activity, in which all the students were required to complete throughout the course of the weeks spent on this theme. The students would learn each skill per week, and following there would be select activities or games designed to practice enforcing those newly acquired skills. The students were given a checklist, that was monitored by the teacher to ensure that they were completing the necessary tasks. This could also be done in the computer lab, however, I found that it worked best with the mini-lab. Following the grammar and reading activities, is a section devoted just to Test Tutor, which assesses the students on the above skills. As a form of differentiation, you may choose to select different activities for different students, depending on their needs.

End Product: Students seem very engaged in these activities. It serves as an excellent review prior to the theme test. You may choose to have the students reflect on what they learned from each one as they complete each story.
