Title:  Name That State
Subject:  Social Studies
Grade Level:  2

Overview:  Students will familiarize themselves with the location of the states and build confidence in their abilities with using a compass rose.

Purpose:  To develop direction sense and label state locations on the United States map.

Activities:
1.  Read and discuss the book United States:  The Scrambled States of America
2.  Review compass rose skills using classroom map of the United States and locating several states on the map.
3.  Distribute a labeled map of the United States from the Social Studies text (pp. G6-G7), a list of abbreviations, and a blank map.
4.  Have students lable each state on the blank map using the state’s abbreviation.
5.  Allow students to work independently or in pairs on the computer, calling up the listed web address, to play the game “Name That State” to further reinforce the location of each state.

Evaluation:  Teacher will assess the completion of students’ U.S. maps.
