Oak Lawn-Hometown School District 123
Curriculum Mini-Lessons
Created as part of the 2004-2005 Classroom Mini-Grant Program

Title: Energy
Subject: Science
Grade Level: 3rd Grade

Overview: Students will create a graphic organizer of examples of different types of energy.

Purpose: Students will demonstrate their understanding of the different forms of energy.

Resources and Materials: Science text book, Discovery Works, p.p. C12-C13; Kidspiration

Internet Address: none

Activities:
1. Read and discuss p.p. C12-C13.
2. Model for students how to use Kidspiration if they haven’t done so before.  This program should be on your hard drive.  You can model this using your iTview.
3. The word energy must be put in the middle of the web.  The web should then include six spokes for each form of energy: chemical, electrical, sound, mechanical, light, and heat energy.  You may want to create this much of the web with the students.
4. The students should then link two examples of each form of energy to that type.(i.e. gas---chemical energy---oil)

Evaluation: The students should print out their webs and turn them into the teacher.  The teacher will check to make sure the students know at least two examples of each type of energy.  You can differentiate this by having higher achieving students add more examples.
