Title:  Bats, Bats Everywhere
Subject:  Science
Grade Level: 1

Overview:  Students will discuss various bat facts, in a small group.

Purpose:  Students will get a better understanding of how bats live and learn about ways to protect them.

Resources and Materials:  Age-appropriate, informational book on bats; iTView

Activities:
1.  Read and discuss informational bat book.
2.  Access the web site:  “bats4kids”
3.  Tell students they will be discussing different facts about bats, in small groups.
4.  Assign one “Bat Fact”, for each group.
5.  Ask each group to tell what they brainstormed, as the answer for their question.
6.  Tell students they will be using their bat knowledge to take a “Bat Quiz” (access on web site: http://www.lhs.berkeley.edu/BATQUIZ/BatQuiz.html).

Evaluation:  Teacher observation of small group discussion.  Teacher will also assess students understanding, by observing the results of the “Bat Quiz”.
