Title:  Dental Health “Eggsperiment”
Subject:
  Science
Grade Level:  1

Overview:  Students will do an experiment to show how teeth can be weakened by acid.

Purpose:  Students will understand why good dental hygiene is so important.

Resources and Materials:  Access web site for materials and preparation; iView

Internet Address:  http://www.crest.com/home/index.jsp (Click on “Crest Kids”- “Eggsperiment”)

Activities: 
1.  Discuss why dental hygiene is important.
2.  Access “Crest” web site.
3.  Tell students they will be doing an experiment, over the next 5 days.
4.  Follow steps to prepare egg and begin experiment.
5.  Follow steps to continue experiment, over the next few days.
6.  After experiment, compare part of the egg that was treated, with the untreated part.
7.  When comparison is complete, ask students to consider why toothpaste is so important to keep teeth hard and strong.

Evaluation:  Teacher observation of whole group understanding and discussion.
