Title: I Know About the Rainforest
Subject: Language Arts, Social Studies, and Computers
Grade Level: First
Overview:
Students will write and create a document that
demonstrates their knowledge about rainforest.
Purpose:
To review student knowledge about the Amazon
Rainforest and assess their knowledge.
Resources and Materials:
KidPix Studio Deluxe licensed software, picture book
about rainforest animals In
the Jungle written by Fay Robinson, Welcome to the Green House written by Jane Yolen
Activities:
1. Gather the whole group of students to read the
stories In the Jungle and Welcome to the Green
House.
2. Ask review questions about the various animals
that live in the rainforest.
3. List the names of animals that students know live
in the rainforest.
4. Have students click on the Macintosh HD and go to
the KidPix Studio software. Double click to open program.
5. Open the KidPix by clicking the red box in the
center. This opens a blank page.
6. Have students click the typewriter button in the
sidebar to type their name in the top Left hand corner. They may
also add the title Rainforests to the top of their paper.
7. Instruct students to click on the rubber stamp
button in the sidebar, then click Goodies on the menu bar at the top,
go to Pick a Stamp Set.
8. When the Stamp sets open, select the Natural
category or the Nature category.
9. Instruct students to select three or four of the
animals that live in the rainforest to stamp them into their
document. Stamps can be made larger by holding the Shift key when
clicking on the paper. Be sure to inform the students to only stamp the
picture once.
10. Once students have selected the animals
from the Stamp set, have them click on the typewriter button in the
sidebar and click with the mouse next to the animal they stamped.
11. In the text box, have students type a sentence
to tell about the animal that they selected. Tell them to look at
the list of animals we made to see the correct spelling of the animal’s
name.
12. When students are finished, print the final
product.
Evaluation:
Review of student’s computer creation to check for
understanding.
