Ms. Fern Schumer Chapman, author of Is it Night or Day?, visited with 8th grade students at OLHMS on Tuesday, February 21, 2012. Ms. Schumer discussed the stories from her book as well as the writing process. The following exerpt is from Ms. Chapman's website and explains the background to her novel.
"Chapman’s mother, Edith Schumer, was one of the children rescued from Nazi Germany by a little-known American program called The One Thousand Children project. Chapman’s young adult historical novel, Is It Night or Day?, captures this unique story of childhood immigration and resonates with universal themes of assimilation, family legacy, prejudice, loss, and identity. This book serves as a kind of prequel to Chapman’s adult memoir, Motherland, which captures the author and her mother’s return to the small German village fifty-four years after Edith had left. There, the two women discover that no one has escaped the shame, guilt, and lingering scars of the war."
