OLHMS ATHLETICS

Southwest Interscholatic Conference (SWIC)

OLHMS is a member of the SWIC which offers many competitive activities, including the following: boys’ and girls’ softball, boys’ and girls’ cross country, girls’ and boys’ basketball, girls’ and boys’ volleyball, girls’ and boys’ track, Mathletes, and Declamation.

OLHMS provides a broad and varied program of extracurricular activities designed to meet the needs and interests of our students. Students who represent OLHMS in extracurricular activities must maintain good academic and disciplinary status in order to remain eligible for these programs. Student eligibility is based on the student’s schoolwork and behavior. Any team member who receives an “F” in any subject is temporarily suspended from competition for two weeks, or until academic improvement is noted. At the coach’s discretion, students who are on activity suspension may practice but not play in SWIC sanctioned games or events until a passing grade or progress is made toward improving their academic performance.

Eligibility: As representatives of OLHMS, all students involved in before/after school activities are subject to eligibility procedures as defined by each group or team. Students may be restricted participation in any activity on the basis of academic and/or behavioral deficiency.

Participation: Each student at OLHMS has the opportunity to join and/or try-out for co-curricular activities. Students absent from any part of the school day will be deemed ineligible for participation in any co-curricular activity on the day of the absence. Due to the number of activities available at OLHMS, at times, schedules may overlap. Coaches/sponsors will make every effort to allow students the opportunity to participate in more than one activity. Occasionally, students will need to choose between two different activities.

Physicals: A state of Illinois statue mandates an annual physical examination for all students participating in interscholastic athletics. Students will be denied participation in any sport until proof of a current physical is on file with the school.

Spectator Expectations: Spectators at any school-sponsored event are expected to act and behave in an appropriate and considerate manner at all times. Students who attend school sponsored events must have a permission form signed by a parent/guardian and on file in the school office. Any student leaving the building during an event will not be allowed to re-enter unless accompanied by a parent/guardian.

Guidelines for Spectators:

1. Our doors open at 3:45 pm for home events. Do not arrive before that time.
2. Students must remove their hats while in the building.
3. Once you've arrived to attend a game, you are restricted to the main Gym area. If you leave the Gym and the game, you may not return later that afternoon or evening.
4. Rules of good conduct apply during our games, as they would during the school day and consequences for inappropriate behavior are the same as they would be during the school day, including possible suspension or detentions.
5. We ask our OLHMS spectators to demonstrate good sportsmanship at all times. Do not ridicule or show disrespect to opposing players. Anyone throwing any objects on the gym floor or in the bleachers will be dismissed with no opportunity to attend future events. Anyone using profane or foul language will be dismissed with no opportunity to attend future events.
6. Respect any adult or OLHMS Teacher who may talk to you or give you directions.
7. There is no eating or drinking refreshments in the Gym.
8. Finally, treat visitors from other schools with respect. Think about how you would want to be treated if you visited another school for a game.
