Student Led Conferences at OLHMS

November 18, 2011

We want to develop life-long learners at OLHLMS!  Using a "Student-Led" Conference format help us get one step closer to this goal.  We believe that student-led conferences help our students take more ownership and awareness over their learning, as well as enhance self-confidence and communication skills.  I would enjoy hearing more from teachers and families!  Comment on any thoughts you have on our family conference format.  What do you like?  What can be improved?  Any ideas that you feel would make our conference practice better!

Veteran's Day ~ A Picture Speaks a Thousand Words

November 11, 2011

After celebrating Veteran's Day today as a school community, I wanted to post someting meaningful about Veteran's Day.  They say a picture speaks a thousand words!  How does this pictuire, created by Gary Varvel speak to you?  It immediately made me feel both a strong sense of pride and patriotism for our country.

Thank a Veteran today!  They deserve it!

It reminds of my Grandpa and we need to respect the veterans every day.l
Joseph Iwema 6:28PM 12/01/11
It makes me think a of the veterans who fights for our nation. It make me think of respect and honor that you should show to everyone. Also that we are united nation, and when something goes wrong, we lean on each other for help. People think that they can tear us apart, but what they are really doing, is making us stronger.
Pamela 5:45PM 11/11/11
I looked at this picture earlier today and I now that i look at it again, I see a different thing inside of this picture every time i look closer. The background to the veteran's left looks like D-day so I think he was probably there at the time. I can't imagine being there at that place at that time. I just noticed now the soldier in his head area is also apart of his face in some way. The head and helmet of the soldier in his head (as well as the thing in the soldiers mouth) is the veteran's eyes that are closed and a tear is running down his face. This picture is much more complex then I thought, and this picture really makes you think.
Jovanni 4:17PM 11/11/11

jack 4:15PM 11/11/11
I think this picture speaks to me because it has a lot of thoughtful meaning to it. One thoughtful meaning i think about, when i see this picture, is that the little picture of the man inside the other mans head might mean that he is always thinking about a person he fought with that he had a good friendship with him or her that passed away during the war they were in.
Itzel 4:15PM 11/11/11
This to me is him thinking back to when he was a young soldier and all of the soldiers that were very very good friends with him that he might have lost during any oft he war's the soldier in the middle to me is the soldiers helmet guard is the teardrop and he is crying because all of his friends family members he lost in the war so that is what it means to me.
Alejandro 4:14PM 11/11/11
I think this picture creative because the eye ball of the man is him self if you look close enough, and it shows how veterans went through a lot in war in this picture it shows the soldiers going on to the beach during D-Day it shows how the veterans faced danger and didn't know if they would come out alive today on veterans day we should thank them for are freedom
nick 4:14PM 11/11/11
I had to look at it a few times, and I saw my grandpa. I rember when he had to go out there and do that. But in the actual picture I see a brave man that has lost a friend when he was in the war with it.

Also this picture shows bravery with the crashed boat and the brave soldiers walking out of it.
Anna 4:13PM 11/11/11
This picture means a lot to me. It makes me think of all the veterans who have died for us. Katie 4:12PM 11/11/11
This picture tells me that the veteran in the picture has a soldier on his head which is the soldier he once was. I really like this picture because it shows that soldiers out there don't even know us yet they would stop a bullet for us. We can never forget these brave, brave, men and women.
Michael 4:12PM 11/11/11

Hayliee . 4:11PM 11/11/11
This picture makes me feel strong and brave because my uncle died before he could go to war. I do believe that we should all do something important in our lives. My hero's are my parents because they always influence me to do my best. I want to thank all of the Veterans in the world for protecting our country and for risking their lives for us.
Sierran R. 4:10PM 11/11/11
the picture makes me feel like I need to apreciate my freedom
troy w 4:09PM 11/11/11
I think the picture means that the man who is crying is probly crying because he has maybe a family member that has died or one of his friend has died because of the war. The men in the back who are in the water are probly are running to the person who got hurt or one of there team ates. This picture is really really sad when you see it.
Jannah O 4:08PM 11/11/11
I think this picture says that all the hard work the veterans put into saving our word from bad things. It also says to me that the reason this country is free because of the Navy, Marines, Army, and Coast Guard.

This picture tells me that the man is thinking about how other soldiers and himself served in our country. He is proud to be a soldier and fighting for our country.
Sydney 4:01PM 11/11/11
I think the picture was drawn so people do not forget how important veterans day is.Also I think they drew this because I think they want us to remember the victories we had in Afganistan, Iraq, World War 1, and World War 2. Last thing i think the picture represents that we should never forget the veterans that risked there lives so that one day in hope there will be no more war and we will all live in peace.
Nick L. 6th grade 4:00PM 11/11/11
IT WAS VERY VERY COOL. I LIKE HOW YOU PLAYED IT OUT.

Zach 3:59PM 11/11/11
i think the picture was drawn to teach us about veterans day and what bravery the men and women of arm forces and there susses in there
tyler jatho 6 grade 3:54PM 11/11/11
I think this picture was drawn to show us that its important to remember those who have given their lives to protect our freedom. In the picture it shows a veteran weeping and remembering his fallen comerads.the lesson is REMEMBER the FALLEN. forget
Brianna 2:23PM 11/11/11
it is sad because it looks like most of the soldiers died by falling in the deep water.
Stephanie johnson 2:22PM 11/11/11
I think that this picture says a lot of things to me like that the veterans are proud to serve our country and that even if you are a past veteran you still have a solider in you, and whenever i see this kind of picture i will think that they died for me and i lived for them.
Kacie 2:20PM 11/11/11

Kacie 2:19PM 11/11/11
This picture speaks to me visually, what I see in this picture is a veteran that has served in a war. Also I see a man that is remembering the year he was in the army. Lastly maybe he is remembering the friends he lost and he knows they will always we with him in his heart.
Matt 2:19PM 11/11/11
This picture speaks to me visually, what I see in this picture is a veteran that has served in a war. Also I see a man that is remembering the year he was in the army. Lastly maybe he is remembering the friends he lost and he knows they will always we with him in his heart.
Matt 2:19PM 11/11/11
I think this picture says a lot without any words. I think the black and white shows the past, when our country wasn't free and the brave soldiers fought so hard. I think the color picture shows the present. it shows the American flag and how we are now free. Maybe, the man is remembering the times he had with other veterans hat have passed. Overall, I think this picture is trying to show the past and present.
Brigid 2:19PM 11/11/11
This photo is adout a veteran thinking how prod he is to sruve our country and he is sad because he lost alot of friends. this photo is a good photo to sho why we have this day and our wonderful Veterans
Ines 2:17PM 11/11/11
I means to me that maybe the guy is at a funrell for a vet and he is remebering the times they had.
Michael 2:17PM 11/11/11
This picture speaks me by that a life of a veteran is different then others and that this man is at a funeral for his friends. i love this photo because it kind of reminds me of my grandpa because he fought in the army and lost a lot of friends in the war he was in.
Jenna C 2:16PM 11/11/11
This picture tells me that how many people sacraficed for freedome and some make it but some don't and the picture is showing the memories of this veteran and the friends he lost.
EricL 2:16PM 11/11/11
This picture speaks to me in many different ways. One way is through the drawn figure in the middle. There is a solider inside of the large drawn man, to me representing that there is, and always will be, a solider inside of you once you are one at any point. You will never lose that part of you.
Elizabeth 2:16PM 11/11/11
This picture says to me that veterans are proud to serve our country and that their are soldiers in people. Also the colors show from the past to the present like how theirs is white and gray for the past and color for the present.
Esmeralda 2:15PM 11/11/11
It speaks to me by saying he is a veteran and i think that he is at a funeral and in the black and white he is remembering the times he maybe had with that person or people.
kyle m 2:15PM 11/11/11
This picture speaks to me by saying that the memories that the veterans share are more likely the same or similar to other veterans. It also says to me that no matter how old the veterans get, they'll be proud to have served their country and that the memories that they've stored, won't fade.
Michelle 2:15PM 11/11/11
This picture reminds me of like how this older man was back then and he is crying because he remembers his friends who got injured or had died while fighting for our country.
Julia 2:15PM 11/11/11
I think what this says to me is "Once a veteran, always a veteran" to prove that a veteran's heart lives in you forever.
Adam H. 2:15PM 11/11/11
This photo means a lot because of all the people , and what they have done for us. There are no words besides veteran and the name of the man who did it, but it saids so much
Merrian M. 2:15PM 11/11/11
I think that the people on this man's body are the people he saw die in the war. This speaks to me because it represents that we never forget those we lost. They'll always be with us.
Sara 2:14PM 11/11/11
This picture does say a lot, to me i think on the left it means the war we fought, the other side on the right is the freedom we gained, From the war we fought.
Hadi 2:14PM 11/11/11
the man in the picture is crying because the freinds he has lost and what he say in the war
david 2:12PM 11/11/11
Truly, a picture speaks a thousand words.
ian kohlhoff 2:09PM 11/11/11

Olivia 1:38PM 11/11/11
This is a good picture because 1. It reminds me of my uncle he had to retire then he got really ill so he had to take pile and a lot of them then one day he just died and now he is in a cemetery where the war people are. So I really miss him. :(
Kaily S. 1:37PM 11/11/11
This picture speaks so many things about itself to me. It speaks to me about it's sadness, memories, and what he fought for. His country. The picture shows me what it fought for was a good thing, but it also shows it's past and what terrifying and horrible things it suffered throughout the war
Nasser 1:33PM 11/11/11
To me this picture means that the person in the picture is a Veteran. He is proud for the services he committed in the war. He looks like he is in the Navy because he is in the water. He also seems sad because there is a tear in his eye and he sorry for those he fought in the war that died.
Anton 1:31PM 11/11/11
This picture makes me feel....... happy because when i rember Veteran's day i think of "proud to be an American.
Patty 1:31PM 11/11/11
I think this is a memory about his past with him in a war. I think he's crying about how bad is past was. The mood is sadness, because he's had so many bad memory.
Lukas W. 1:30PM 11/11/11
I think that this picture means how this veteran,(all veterans) are feeling kind of sad, because they are remembering what they saw and their experiences.
Anthony 1:29PM 11/11/11
Right away this picture makes me feel proud to be an American and thankful for all of the veterans that have kept this country safe and free for hundreds of years.

Efniel 1:26PM 11/11/11
That pictuire speak of me of my grandpa chester herstowski was in world war II
Liam 12:09PM 11/11/11
This picture has many different meanings but to me it looks like this Vet is looking back when he fought in the war and he remembers how he fought for a bunch of lives and I think he remembers getting off that barge and leaving everything behind. And the reson he is crying is because he may have loss someone.
Jesus 12:08PM 11/11/11
What this picture said to me? it says so much about how much the veterans fight for us and continue to fight for us. It shows me there hard work. Also the veteran is right in front of the U.S Flag it shows me how much they care for us and how much they love this Independent Nation of the U.S It Shows me what a strong nation we are. So that's what this picture means to me. THANK YOU VETERANS.
cecilio 12:08PM 11/11/11
the picture to me is he is a veteran and the picture of them on the beach was something he remembers and he is crying because he remembers being with his friends and team mates and any who died there and he is still alive and is now a veteran.
joseph 12:07PM 11/11/11
This picture speak to me when my step grandfather was in vietnam when he was shot in his leg and arm.
Dylan 12:07PM 11/11/11
This picture says to me that all veterans will never forget what they went through and every time they think about it they cry. This is very sad because you can't change the past so all of the veterans that fought for our freedom will be scared for life and the only thing we can do is honor them. I feel sad for them but honor them wiyth alll my heart just like everybody should because when your safe at home being happy and safe they are out there fighting and risking their lives 24/7
aiste 12:06PM 11/11/11
This picture says to me that this veteran is looking back at what he has done in the war.He is crying so that shows that whatever he has done he is proud or that one of his friends dies during the war. The picture behind him is in black and white so that shows that was set in the past. In the picture he is covered by the word "veteran". This shows that he is a war veteran.
Camila 12:06PM 11/11/11
This picture says to me that he is happy that he was in the war. He is also sad for all the people who lost there lives and the hard times they went though in war.

Alyssa 12:06PM 11/11/11
Looking at this picture, I see that Veterans do so much for us. We should thank them for risking their lives for us.The red, white, and blue symbolizes our freedom and how tough they are for being our Veteran hero.
Jonna 12:06PM 11/11/11
What this picture means to me is that i see a man crying so i think the picture means is that he lost someone who was close to him in the war because there is a man on him face and i think that is the person that he lost in the war is the person on the war.
Bianca 12:06PM 11/11/11
I think that it means he is proud to be a veteran and it's written on him, like he is showing everyone that he is and he wants others to see because he is so proud. I think that the soldier on his face means that it is his friend or family member that died in war. He is remembering him and remembering the awful memories form war.
Allie 12:05PM 11/11/11
This picture made me think sadly. I thought it was sad because he was a Veteran and maybe he is remembering a time when one of his friends have died. My great grandpa was in the war and he died years ago. I'm glad I got to know him for about 4 years before he died. My cousin Jeanette is in Hawaii right now for the NAVY and i miss her very much. That is what this picture reminds me of missing a friend or even a family member.
Shelby 12:05PM 11/11/11
To me this picture means that even though veterans have to leave everything behind like families, friends, and personal items to go to a terrible place they are proud to serve their country and protect it for everyone.
Stan 12:05PM 11/11/11
this guy is remembering the death and terrible hardship that the saw in world war 2
jacob 12:05PM 11/11/11

DuWayne 12:05PM 11/11/11
This picture is about the veteran thinking about his past when he was as in war and how he had to risk his life and how many people have did.
David 12:05PM 11/11/11
What this picture means to me is that the veteran that is in color is remembering when he was in the war and the picture that is the dull color is when he was in war.
Anahi 12:04PM 11/11/11
This picture tells me a life story about how hard it was to fight in the war. this picture make me think of my great grandpas.
Anakin 12:04PM 11/11/11
This picture means to me that the veteran is looking back to what happened to him when he was in the war. He is thankful for what he did.
Nicole(: 12:04PM 11/11/11
When I saw this picture i felt as if the background shows us an event the veteran went threw. It has a lot of detail which I like and every piece has its own meaning.
Danya 12:04PM 11/11/11
This picture to me says its not easy to be a veteran, you have to go through people dieing and sadness and you have to get over it.
Myles 12:04PM 11/11/11
He's trying to remember what he did for his country
Joseph 12:04PM 11/11/11
I think the picture is about the Veterans that have fought to protect us Americans who have gotten injured. they have sacrificed themselves for our own lives instead of theirs they did it to protect us now that they are.......... gone they are in a much better place and they will be remembered and cared about they will also be rewarded in heaven and each day we remember them in our hearts. this is what the picture has reminded me thought me and is. May their souls rest in peace weather dead or alive.

This picture made me think of all the soldiers and veterans of our country, and strong pride for our country. I know that this is a very special day for our vets and active service members. I hope they will have a very good day today. 11/11/11 is also supposed to be a lucky day so think of our vets, and may god bless them for serving our country.
Michael 11:20AM 11/11/11
This picture reminds me of my grandpa that just recently passed away about a month ago. He fought in the war and then became a firefighter a few years after being in the war. He served for the country for a few years, and then served cook county for over 50 years. I am very proud that he was a big part of my life and I miss him so much. I know he was at the ceremony today because I knew he would have been proud to be there with me.
Tara F. 11:18AM 11/11/11
It sort of reminds me of my uncle because he was shot in the Vietnam war and now he is fine but he still fell sorry for all the friends he lost. He is my hero and always will be for me. I hope my cousins can say the same thing about him.
Jonathon D 11:18AM 11/11/11
i fell sad but fulled with pride and patriotism with how these men are save our life by risking theirs and i am filled with hope that they get to come back home to their home and family but over all i feel proud.
Thomas H. 11:18AM 11/11/11
This picture is very meaningful to me. It reminds me of my Great Grandpa that was in World War 2. This picture should make everyone proud and thankful. This picture also makes people feel safe knowing there are people out there risking their lives for us even if then have no idea who we are. This picture means a thousand words and i am thankful for the soldiers that risk their life for us.

This picture tells me that no mater how long ago it was that veterans will always remember the war they were in and the sacrafices that their friends and themselves made
Justin 11:17AM 11/11/11
I think that this picture represents this veterans life story. It shows that now he is proud to be home in America ,and that he is proud to be an American. It also shows this veterans past on what he experienced in the war that he was in.
Liam 11:16AM 11/11/11
This picture makes me proud to know that our soldiers risk there lives for the freedom of our country.
Matt 11:16AM 11/11/11
This picture makes me think of a before and after. The grey is a scene of when he was fighting in the war, and the colored scene is after he had fought in the war and is now a hero.
Sami 11:16AM 11/11/11
This picture reminds me of my dads friend James Gipson. My dad was in the marines too, but he didn't fight in any wars. I honor my friend not just as a friend, as a family member and a veteran. He is what i call a hero. I'm glad he fought in a war just to let our country be free.
Patricia 11:16AM 11/11/11
I think its cool how he was sad about the past so it was in black and white. And how in the present day when he's thinking or it it's in color.
Molly C. 11:15AM 11/11/11
Veterans day is cool to celbrate for people who took thier lives for us.

I don't think I can stump Mr. Enderle because at math class, I got a little confused sometimes in class with some questions. I am pretty smart but not smart enough to stump the principle in perimeter and area.
Jovanni 8:48AM 11/11/11
Knowing how to use perimeter and area is very important. We need to understand it if we wsnt to buliad something as simple as a fence or as complex as a buliding.
Peyton 7:01AM 11/11/11
Mrs.Ogean is teaching use perimiter and area.It helps us beacuse if we buy a house and put a fence up we need to know perimiter.

Great creativity and problem solving! I applaud each of your efforts. HINTS for #'s 3, 7, and 9 ~ Think about what type of Presidential speeches, the opposite trait of being a liar, and the specific types of Spanish words. Keep guessing!
