Representative Burke Visits OLHMS!

January 28, 2012

7th Grade Social Studies classes had the wonderful opportunity to learn about our Illinois State Government and real lawmaking from Representative Kelly Burke, 36th District.  Social studies teachers, Mr. Weber and Mr. Sifling, have been studying Illinois State Government and provided classes the opportunity to engage in discussions and debates with a real-life Illinois State Representative. At OLHMS, we are very interested in creating learning experiences for students that are both meaningful and relevant, transforming knowledge outside the parameters of textbooks into students lives.  Let me know what you think about the visit?  I am especially interested in hearing what our 7th Grade students think!  What did you most learn most about government from Representative Burke?

I wasn't hear either when Representative Kelly Burke came but I found it interesting about the law making process. It helps us all to learn about this so we may all have a better understanding of both our Federal and State Government.

I think that it was a great experience for me and my peers, we really enjoyed meeting somebody in real life that had to do with what we are studying, you don't always get to do that. I think she really was open minded and cared of what we had to say.

Julia 10:32AM 01/31/12
I thought her visit was very interesting. It taught me more then just looking at a book because we got to experience how they actually make laws and it got me better understanding of why those laws are made. It takes a long process to make the laws so now i know that even if i don't like the law, it must be good because of how many other people like the law and think it is a good idea.
Alyssa Sorrentino 10:32AM 01/31/12
I liked having representative Burke come to our school is because she told us about how bills are passed and she told us about her job as a representative. I learned that to pass a bill you have to have witnesses and the other members have to agree on the law.
Jack Keane 10:32AM 01/31/12
Represantative Burke tought us about how her branch of the government she told us that when they vote on a bill they dnont just make little papers and put in a bucket no they use hightech gear and buttons to put there votes in and atb the end they say why they feel that a bill should be passes on. And if they disagree they dont just argue they have to vote all over again until one gets the most.
Alejandro Jimenez- Baeza 10:32AM 01/31/12

Joseph Mendala 10:31AM 01/31/12

I though it was a fun experience to have an actual representative from the state of illinois to come and explain what it is actualy like instead of just reading about it. What I learned the most from Kelly Burkes visit is that a bill has to go through so many things for it to be turned into a law and, how long it takes to hear if your bill got approved or not.
Brendon Schneider 10:30AM 01/31/12
When Kelly Burke came to our school, she told us how a bill is passed in the general assembly. She told us about the process on how the bill goes through and how representatives vote. Connecting the Past with the Present

January 21, 2012

We live in a great community!  Knowing your community is extremely important.  I believe it is the responsibility of us all to be stewards of where we live and to make a difference in our community.  How much do we know about the Village of Oak Lawn?  Take some time to read up on the amazing history of the very town we live in by accessing the Oak Lawn Village History page.  After reading about our hisotry, take a look at the Historcial Buildings Pictures in our OLHMS Picture Gallery.  Looking at snapshots from the past can help us better understand just who we are and show us how things have changed.  Click on the pictures and see just some of the many historic homes, schools and buildings located throughout the Village of Oak Lawn!  Respond to my blog about this topic.  I am interseted in hearing about how everyone feels about the communties of Oak Lawn and Hometown!
