Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports

Oak Lawn Hometown District 123 focuses on student achievement and success across all content and grade levels. One of the ways District 123 plans to support this expectation is by creating a safe and positive learning environment for all students. As part of the District Improvement Plan, each building will implement the Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports (PBIS) initiative.

PBIS began at Covington School during the 2005 / 2006 school year. At the beginning of the 2009 / 2010 school year, every school in District 123 began implementing PBIS. This initiative is a proactive, systemic approach to preventing and responding to classroom and school discipline problems. PBIS develops school-wide systems that support staff to teach and promote positive, appropriate behavior in all students. This process focuses on improving the positive behavior of all students. Emphasis is directed toward developing and maintaining safe learning environments where teachers can teach and students can learn.

In the spring of 2009, all schools established a core Universal Team, which consist of an Administrator, Internal Coach, General Education Teachers, Special Education Teachers, and Support Staff. These teams worked diligently during the summer to create building matrices that outline and define school-wide expectations. Currently, these team members meet regularly to plan and review PBIS implementation such as creating cool tools (the behavioral lesson plans), plan student recognitions, review disciplinary data, and assess the effectiveness of interventions.

Sincerely,
