Speech/Language Pathologist Jule Philippon - Speech/Language Pathologist (Send e-mail)
At Hannum School, speech/language therapy is provided for students from the age of 3 years through fifth grade who have communication disorders. This includes both speech disorders and language disorders.
A speech disorder refers to problems with the actual production of sounds such as: - Articulation disorders: involves mispronouncing speech sounds by omitting, distorting. substituting, or adding sounds which can make speech difficult to understand. - Phonological processing disorders: Phonology is the sound system of language. Children who have phonological processing disorders have not learned the rules for how sounds fit together to make words and use certain processes to simplify words. - Fluency Disorders: the normal flow or rhythm of speech is disrupted. Sounds, syllables or words are repeated, prolonged, or blocked. These speech disruptions may be accompanied by struggling behaviors, such as eye blinks, tremors, head jerking, etc. - Voice disorders: problems with the pitch, volume, or quality of the voice.
A language disorder refers to difficulties understanding and/or using language to communicate effectively. A person may have difficulty with language form (syntax and morphology), content (semantics), use (pragmatics), or verbal reasoning (using language to think).
