"Chick" Out Our Little Farmers: Preschoolers Foster Baby Chicks at the ELC

Spring has brought new life and lots of excitement to the Early Learning Center! Thanks to Officer, I mean Farmer Craig, a group of fuzzy baby chicks have arrived, and our preschoolers are now proud foster farmers for the next three weeks!

This special hands-on experience is more than just adorable.  It is a multi-sensory learning opportunity where students have the opportunity to engage in a wide variety of activities that support their learning across all developmental domains. From gently touching the soft down of the chicks to listening to their tiny peeps, students are exploring the world through all five senses.

The life cycle of a chicken has been a natural curiosity since our fuzzy friends arrived. As part of the project, our young learners are diving into literacy with chick-themed stories, songs, and vocabulary to deepen their connection and understanding about the natural world.  Students are strengthening fine motor skills through activities like drawing and journaling as they observe their new friends as well as crafting fun projects.

Beyond academics, this experience nurtures empathy and responsibility. Students are learning how to gently care for living things by helping feed and tend to the baby chicks and are developing compassion and an early understanding of the importance of kindness and responsibility.

Farmer Craig stated when dropping off the chicks to the classrooms, “Chick fostering is my favorite.  I love seeing kids interact with the chicks and the calmness and joy it brings to the kids. They learn so much from these little guys and it’s just so much fun.”

This spring, we invite you to “chick out” all the amazing learning and love happening at the ELC. Our little farmers are growing right alongside their new feathered friends!
