Smiles All Around: ELC Celebrates World Smile Day!

The ELC was all smiles on Friday, October 3rd, as students celebrated World Smile Day! Leading up to the big day, preschoolers prepared by cutting faces out of magazines and identifying different emotions. This engaging activity not only encouraged social-emotional awareness but also strengthened fine motor and scissor practice, both of which are essential for developing hand-eye coordination and building the muscle control needed for future writing skills.

During the celebration, students participated in a smiley face scavenger hunt throughout the hallways. With clipboards in hand, they searched for and matched a variety of emotions. This activity inspired movement, exploration, and spatial awareness as students traveled the hallways, documented their discoveries, and even strengthened their shoulder and arm muscles while holding their clipboards up to the wall, which are all important steps in supporting physical readiness for writing.

The halls were filled with joy and color as students and staff wore yellow, smiley faces, and shirts with positive messages. As the creator of the smiley face, Harvey Ball, once said:

“The world is a better place when you smile.”

Adding to the cheerful spirit, staff were treated to the first Woot Woot Wagon of the year from Christine, Erica, and Nicole! Themed “Say Cheese and Smile,” the wagon rolled through the building offering a variety of smile-inspired treats.

It’s the little things that brighten the day at the ELC and this special day of smiles made sure everyone, big and small, had a reason to grin!
