International Bread Night Brings Community, Culture, and Connection to the ELC

The Early Learning Center hosted its annual International Bread Night on the evening of Wednesday, December 4th, as a celebration of learning for the Bread Study with an experience rich in culture, stories, and community. Families were invited to bring samples of bread native to their heritage and home countries, creating a vibrant and delicious tapestry of traditions. Some families even brought drinks to wash it all down, including Mexican Jarritos and Sudanese Black Tea, adding even more authenticity to the night.

Countries represented included Jordan, the United States, Italy, Israel, Ireland, Morocco, Mexico, and Sudan. Families filled the ELC with the aromas of homemade favorites, meaningful stories, and joyful conversations, highlighting the idea that learning takes place at our tables, not just in the classroom.

Students enjoyed hands-on activities throughout the evening, including building with pizza boxes generously donated by Grassano’s Pizza in Oak Lawn, rolling and cutting their own “cookies” with playdough, reading books about bread, and even coloring on the wall! As they sampled different varieties of bread, children collected stamps in their “passports,” adding an interactive layer to their global exploration.

The event also marked the kickoff of Warm Bread, Warm Hearts, our winter donation drive for hats, gloves, and socks to support families in need.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the families who contributed bread, beverages, and stories while connecting with one another. Events like this remind us that we all BELONG at the ELC, and that every shared meal is an opportunity to learn, celebrate, and grow together.
