Tiny Wings Take Flight: Preschoolers Release Their Butterflies

Tiny Wings Take Flight: Preschoolers Release Their Butterflies

After weeks of wonder, observation, and excitement, preschoolers celebrated the grand finale of their insect study by releasing butterflies into nature in the ELC Learning Garden. Students spent time learning all about insects and had the opportunity to observe the butterfly life cycle firsthand.

Throughout the study, students checked on their butterflies every day, noticing changes, asking questions, and making predictions. As they watched the transformation happen, students learned important science concepts through hands-on experiences and discovery and vocabulary words like chrysalis and cocoon. They went on bug hunts with AAC devices and searched the Learning Garden for other insects to replace their classroom caterpillars and butterflies, but nothing compares to the gentle flutter of those colorful wings.

The butterfly release brought smiles and excitement and a few emotional goodbyes as students carefully watched their butterflies spread their wings and fly away. The experience helped bring learning to life and gave students a meaningful connection to nature, growth, and the incredible changes that happen all around us.
