Third Grade Reading Enrichment Meets “The Wild Robot” Author Peter Brown

Third grade reading enrichment students recently wrapped up an exciting novel study of The Wild Robot and the experience ended with a memorable surprise. Students had the special opportunity to participate in a virtual author visit with Peter Brown, the award-winning writer and illustrator of the beloved novel.

During the virtual session, students listened as Brown shared his journey to becoming both an author and illustrator. He spoke about the inspirations behind The Wild Robot, from his love of nature to his curiosity about how technology and the natural world might collide. Students were highly engaged, asking thoughtful questions about the writing process and the characters they had grown to love throughout the unit.

One of the biggest highlights came when Brown taught the group how to draw a scene from the novel featuring Roz, the brave and curious robot at the heart of the story. Students followed along step-by-step, proudly creating their own illustrations inspired by the book.

The virtual visit provided a meaningful and creative culmination to the novel study, leaving students inspired to read, imagine, and maybe even write stories of their own.
