Math in the Mix at Ancestral Oven

Math in the Mix at Ancestral Oven

Fourth grade math enrichment students recently took their learning beyond the classroom walls with a hands-on field trip to Ancestral Oven, a local bakery proudly owned and operated by a District 123 family.

During their visit, students explored the math, science, and history behind baking sourdough bread. From measuring ingredients with precision, students saw firsthand how math plays an essential role in the baking process.

The science of sourdough sparked curiosity as students discovered how natural yeast causes bread to rise through fermentation. The historical roots of sourdough were also kneaded into the lesson, as students explored how breadmaking traditions have been passed down for generations across cultures.

This enriching experience not only strengthened students’ understanding of real-world math applications but also connected them with a local family business in their community. It was truly a day of learning that was both educational and delicious!
