Hometown PBIS Cool Tools

Hometown School Expectations

Students participated in different stations around the building working on ways to be respectful, responsible and safe.

School is back in session and we are ready to have an amazing year!  Students have filled their desks with crayons, scissors, glue sticks and more.  To kick off the year, Hometown School hosted their first annual school wide PBIS Boot Camp.  Our Hometown rules state that students and staff will be safe, respectful, and responsible. The PBIS Boot Camp helped to teach the students the specific positive actions they will  exhibit through the use of Cool Tool Lesson plans.

The students went to different stations around the building led by staff members.  They talked about procedures for arrival and dismissal. The purpose of this station was to practice proper behavior when standing in line in the morning.  Students use role play to discuss scenarios such as you are waiting in line for your teacher and you begin swinging your book bag. You hit your neighbor. You stop and remember you are not being safe. You apologize and put your book bag on correctly.  By role playing these situations, students feel prepared and aware of how to arrive safely and responsibly.

Another Cool Tool Station was all about Super Sub Spirit (Substitute Teachers & Kindness).  Our friends practiced proper behavior when the teacher is absent.  They discussed a plan to help establish a procedure for assisting a substitute and teach students that substitute teachers are taking place of their teacher and deserve the same respect they give their regular teacher.

The next station students visited was the station about assembly behavior.  Students were told that during an assembly they need to sit quietly and watch the presenter.  They must be respectful and applaud when the presenter is finished.  They role played scenarios where students were not to shout out during a performance.  This Cool Tool will help students be respectful of the presenter, their teachers and their peers.

Students also went to different stations that talked about proper playground behavior, lunchroom behavior and bathroom behavior.  Staff members talked about how to maintain safety on the playgroun and make the right choices, because any choice we make will have an end result.  When using the bathroom, students must work to keep our bathrooms clean and safe.  They must be quiet so we do not disturb another classroom and get back to the classroom as soon as possible to not miss instruction.

Last but not least, students practiced entering and exiting the lunchroom in order to establish a positive atmosphere in the lunchroom and practice and maintain good manners. Students were very eager to participate in the role playing excercises and enjoyed the Cool Tool Day.

Thank you to Dr. Bencik, Miss Kapelinski, the PBIS (positive behavior incentive system) team and the all of the staff at Hometown School for making this day possible.  We are ready to have an amazing year.
