CASE students deliver cookies to teachers during the CASE Cookie Cart kickoff

The "CASE Cookie Cart" has popped up this spring in a pilot program with our special education students.  Teachers are hoping to implement this new program on a weekly or bi-weekly basis next school year.  Communication, Academic, and Social Education (CASE) is a program on the continuum of special education services provided within District 123.  The CASE program services students who have significant communication and social needs that interfere with their academic achievement.   At Hometown School, teachers have launched a small cookie-selling venture as part of their life skills curriculum. The project, which combines baking, budgeting, customer service, and teamwork, is designed to help students with developmental and learning differences gain practical experience in a supportive, real-world setting. The goal would be to have our students practice daily living skills and social communication to pack and deliver cookies to our staff.

“Our goal is to give students authentic opportunities to build the skills they’ll use throughout their lives,” said CASE teacher Kara Goutos.  During this kickoff event, the students walked with their teachers up and down the hallways sharing their sweet treats with teachers.  The students were proud and happy to share  one cookie at a time.

"We hope to use the CASE Cookie Cart profits to fund community outings for our students" said Mrs. Goutos.  We sure are happy for these sweet treats and happy smiles.
