20 Years of the Wizard of Oz

Dorothy gets a little help from Glenda the Good Witch to find her way back to Hometown....

The yellow brick road made its way back to our school this week as the 2nd graders took the stage for the 20th annual performance of The Wizard of Oz—a beloved tradition that continues to capture hearts year after year.

Directed by Mrs. Tully, Mrs. Strelow, and Mrs. Ivers, this year’s show featured a talented young cast who brought the classic story to life with energy, creativity, and plenty of heart. From Munchkinland to Emerald City, students dazzled the audience with a melting witch, Emerald dancers, tie dyed tshirts—all created with lots of teamwork and imagination.

This special tradition began 20 years ago with Mrs. Mary Matusiak, a former 2nd grade teacher whose love for her students inspired the very first performance. Although Mrs. Matusiak has since passed away, her vision lives on in every child who steps on stage.

We also extend a heartfelt thank-you to Mrs. Coughlin, who retired last year after many years of dedicated teaching and tireless work behind the scenes of The Wizard of Oz. Mrs. Coughlin played a key role in carrying on this tradition, helping it grow and thrive for nearly two decades.

"Mary started something magical, and Mrs. Coughlin made sure it never lost its sparkle," said Mrs. Tully. "We’re so proud to continue what they began."

A big thank you to all the teachers, volunteers, and families who supported this wonderful event—and to our 2nd grade stars for reminding us there's no place like HOMETOWN!
