Second Graders Celebrate Tall Tales and Fairy Tales

Paul Bunyan, Babe the Blue Ox and Pecos Bill had a great time at their celebration.

The second graders at Hometown Elementary wrapped up their CKLA unit on Tall Tales and Fairy Tales with a fun and creative culminating celebration. After weeks of reading stories like "Paul Bunyan", "Old Man and the Sea", "Beauty and the Beast", and more, the students had a chance to bring their learning to life with activities, art, and snacks.

During the party, students became storytellers themselves by creating their own tall tales using sticker stories. They also practiced their art skills with a directed drawing of the larger-than-life Paul Bunyan, whose adventures have sparked the imaginations of readers for generations.

Of course, no celebration would be complete without themed snacks! The classroom menu featured “Babe the Blue Ox Water,” fluffy “Paul Bunyan Flapjacks,” and crunchy Goldfish crackers to keep students fueled while they enjoyed their activities.

Teachers shared that this culminating experience helped students connect their reading to hands-on learning, while also encouraging creativity and collaboration. The laughter, stories, and artwork made it a memorable day for everyone.

The second graders left their celebration not only with full stomachs, but also with a deeper appreciation for the power of stories — both the ones they read and the ones they created.
