Third graders met on with author Peter Brown via Zoom to discuss his book The Wild Robot.
Students in all third grade ELA enrichment groups across District 123 had an unforgettable experience this week as they participated in a virtual author visit with Peter Brown, creator of book The Wild Robot. The timing couldn’t have been better—students are wrapping up The Wild Robot as part of their fiction ELA unit, making the visit a perfect culminating experience. A special shout-out goes to Mrs. Arreola-Malagon from our Tech Team, who discovered this opportunity and shared it with our enrichment teachers!
During the zoom visit, author Peter Brown gave students a behind-the-scenes look into his life as an author and illustrator. He spoke about his childhood love of drawing, how his ideas take shape, and what a typical day looks like when he’s writing full-time. Students were excited to hear him read a section from the new illustrated edition of The Wild Robot and were thrilled to follow along during a live drawing lesson led by Brown himself.
Classrooms also had the chance to submit questions, which Brown thoughtfully answered, deepening students’ understanding of the writing and artistic process. The visit wrapped up with reflection and conversation among our highly engaged and exceptionally well-behaved third graders—teachers couldn’t be prouder of their curiosity and participation.
Perhaps the most exciting moment of all was when Peter Brown shared a special secret: another Wild Robot book is on the way!
The afternoon was filled with creativity, inspiration, and joyful learning—a truly memorable experience for our young readers and writers.
