There was a lot of buzzing, crawling, and creativity happening in the second grade classrooms at Hometown Elementary as students wrapped up their CKLA unit on insects with a celebration that was equal parts fun and learning!

After spending weeks discovering fascinating facts about insects—like how they live, grow, and survive—students got the chance to bring their knowledge to life in some truly memorable ways.

One of the highlights of the celebration was a hands-on art activity where students sculpted their very own clay bugs. From colorful butterflies to wiggly worms and detailed beetles, each creation showed off the students’ creativity and understanding of insect body parts. You could spot carefully crafted antennae, segmented bodies, and even tiny legs—proof that these young entomologists were paying close attention during their lessons!

But the fun didn’t stop there—because what’s an insect celebration without some themed treats? Students enjoyed “bug” graham crackers, a sweet and silly snack that had everyone smiling. To wash it down, they sipped on “nectar” (juice boxes) using straws, just like real insects do when they gather food from flowers. It was the perfect way to turn learning into a full sensory experience!

To top off the day, students relaxed and enjoyed watching A Bug’s Life, a favorite film that brought many of the concepts they learned into a fun and engaging story. As they watched, the students were excited to recognize insect behaviors and characteristics they had studied in class.

This end-of-unit celebration was more than just a party—it was a joyful way to reinforce learning, spark curiosity, and celebrate all the hard work students put into their studies. The second-graders at Hometown Elementary truly showed that learning can be both meaningful and fun.

Way to go, second grade—your hard work really bugged us in the best way possible!
