The Scarecrow Is Looking for Oz

The Yellow Brick Road led back to our school this week as the 2nd graders took the stage for the 21st annual performance of The Wizard of Oz—a treasured Hometown Elementary tradition that continues to delight audiences year after year.

Directed by Mrs. Tully, Mrs. Strelow, and Mrs. Sheedy, this year’s production featured a talented cast of young performers who brought the classic story to life with energy, creativity, and plenty of heart. From Munchkinland to Emerald City, students wowed the crowd with lively musical numbers, a dramatic melting witch, dazzling Emerald City dancers, and colorful tie-dyed costumes—all made possible through teamwork, imagination, and weeks of hard work.

This beloved tradition began 21 years ago with Mrs. Mary Matusiak, a former 2nd grade teacher whose passion for her students inspired the very first performance. Although Mrs. Matusiak has since passed away, her legacy continues to shine through every child who steps onto the stage.

This show is also performed in honor of Mrs. Coughlin, our beloved retiredHometown second grade teacher, who spent many years helping bring The Wizard of Oz to life behind the scenes. Her dedication and love for the production helped the tradition grow and thrive for over two decades, and her impact continues to be felt by students and staff alike.

“Mary started something truly magical, and Mrs. Coughlin helped keep that magic alive for so many years,” said Mrs. Tully. “We are honored to continue this special tradition with our students.”

A heartfelt thank-you goes out to all of the teachers, volunteers, and families who supported this year’s production—and to our incredible 2nd grade stars for reminding us that there’s no place like HOMETOWN!
