Are Seeds Alive?

Students sorting and observing seeds.

Students sorting seeds by size, texture and color.

Second grade students are analyzing, exploring, and observing during science class. This unit is focusing on plants and animal relationships. Throughout these investigations, students construct an understanding that seeds need sunlight and water to grow into full grown plants.

“We observed the size and color of the seeds. We felt the seeds and described if they were rough or smooth.” Brianna, a second grade student.

Niko shared, “I sorted the seeds big to little. I liked working with a partner. We wrote what we observed in our notebooks. I drew the tiny seed and the big seed.”

As this unit continues the students will expand their ideas by investigating and questioning in small groups or with partners.
