On Friday, December 9, 2022 Sward School hosted a Chicago Blackhawks spirit day celebrating Mrs. Collura, 4th grade teacher. Mrs. Collura was honored by the Chicago Blackhawks Future Goals Program as November, Teacher of the Month. Her 4th grade class participates in these curious and engaging STEM activities, allowing for hockey in the classroom.
Juan, a 4th grade student, "I like the uncover the ice math problem, where you have to uncover the ice and figure out the area and perimeter. It is a lot of fun to watch the videos to help me learn. Go Hawks."
Mrs. Collura enjoyed the Blackhawks game with her family and meeting Ms.October.
Who is your favorite NHL® player and why?
"Jonathan Toews-I think he is an exemplary leader, and probably one of the best Captains ever in the NHL . His leadership and skill on the ice make his teammates better players. I don’t always see that with other captains. He has been consistent in this no matter what. His struggles have never interfered with his ability to be a great captain." Mrs. Collura
What is your favorite part of the Future Goals™program? How do you see STEM in the game of hockey?
"My favorite part of the Future goals program is that it shows kids there are real world applications for math and science. Many times I hear things like, I’m not going to be a teacher or a scientist, why do I need to learn this?'' Kids also have some misconceptions about athletes and what they need to be successful. This program shows them math and science are everywhere." Mrs. Collura
