Rosie and her Grandfather
Sward Elementary School proudly hosted its annual Veterans Day Assembly to honor the brave men and women who have served our country. The program, led by Sward’s Student Council, celebrated patriotism, gratitude, and community through music, poetry, and special tributes.
The ceremony began with the presentation of the flags by Cub Scouts Pack 3618, followed by the singing of The Star-Spangled Banner and Thank You Soldiers, performed by Mrs. Glikis and the Sward Chorus. Their heartfelt performance set a respectful and uplifting tone for the event.
Poetry contest winners, introduced by Mrs. Keblusek, shared their original poems dedicated to America’s veterans, expressing appreciation for their courage and sacrifice.
The assembly welcomed a special guest, Martin McLaughlin of the United States Coast Guard, grandfather of Rosie, a Sward 5th grader. She shared reflections on his service and the importance of honoring those who protect our freedoms.
“One of his important duties in the Coast Guard was to write and report on his fellow guardsmen and their important stories so that people everywhere could read and understand the bravery they faced everyday protecting us. Many people like my grandpa left their homes and families when they were young to serve our country across the United States and all over the world. I am very proud of my grandfather and his service to our country.”
The audience was treated to a moving performance of God Bless America by violinist Hailey Coennen, whose talent and emotion captivated everyone in attendance. In a touching moment, Mrs. Amra led the Pin Presentation, recognizing each veteran in attendance with a token of appreciation from the Sward community. The program concluded with a spirited rendition of This Land Is Your Land by Mrs. Glikis and the Sward Chorus, celebrating unity and gratitude for the country we share. Following the ceremony, veterans and their families were invited to a reception hosted in the staff lounge. Sward School extends heartfelt thanks to all veterans and their families for their service and sacrifice.
