Sward School’s first graders capped off their CKLA Human Body unit with a hands-on celebration that turned the classroom into a bustling mini–medical center for the afternoon.
After weeks of learning about the body’s major systems, organs, germs, vaccines, and healthy habits, students rotated through a series of interactive centers. Each one designed to bring their new knowledge to life. Dressed in white lab coats, the young “doctors-in-training” scrubbed in for surgery, explored medical tools, and practiced what they had learned in exciting, memorable ways.
At one station, students played the classic Operation game, carefully removing tiny “organs” while practicing precision and teamwork. Another station let students use stethoscopes to listen how a circulatory system works. They also examined X-rays, learning how bones help protect organs and give the body shape. The highlight for many was the pretend operating room, where students “operated” using kid-friendly tools, applying vocabulary and knowledge from the unit as they talked through what the body needs to stay healthy.
