5th Grade's Discussion Takes Flight!

Students showing off their paper airplanes.

The 5th graders in Ms. Giovanazzi’s class will be reading the novel Esperanza Rising in the near future. Students will be examining the human rights of the characters in the novel. In an effort to better prepare the students for the discussions, 5th grade has been learning about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Ms. Giovanazzi asked her students to write down one human right they felt was most important. Students then folded their papers into airplanes and stood in a circle. They launched their airplanes into the middle.

Everyone then picked up an airplane and read the ideas out loud. Students repeated this several times and discussed the various rights picked by their classmates. This activity gave students a chance to discuss deep, meaningful topics that appear in literature.
