Un-be-LEAF-able Creations

Second graders are enjoying the leaf animal activity.

Leaves are beginning to cover the ground and the feeling of fall is in the air. That could only mean one thing for Mrs. Burns' second graders; it’s time to make leaf animals! Students collected leaves and used them to make various animals. This hands-on activity was used for a writing assignment. Students in Mrs. Burns’ class have been working on the writing trait of organization, which teaches the students how to properly organize their writing. However, this lesson did not teach organization alone!  Students learned how to hook a reader in by creating “Bold Beginnings.” They worked on how to add details to their writing while working on their “Mighty Middles.”  Finally, they wrapped their writing up by creating “Excellent Endings.” Students connected each part of their writing by using transition words. Mrs. Burns’ second graders loved tapping into their artistic sides to create these leaf animals and they were able to learn about the art of writing.
