Learning about Communities and Being a Good Citizen

Retired Chicago Police Officer, Mr. Espinoza, speaks to Hannum 3rd grade students about community and being good citizens.

Hannum third grade students and teachers were honored to welcome Michael Espinoza to their classroom as a guest speaker.  Mr. Espinoza is a Marine veteran, a retired Chicago Police Department officer, and currently a professor at Moriane Valley Community College.  A fun connection is that he was also Miss Dominguez's professor!

He shared powerful stories about how he has served his community throughout his life and emphasized the importance of giving back and helping others.  His visit connected perfectly to the third grade social studies unit, where they have been learning about community, being good citizens, and how people work together to create change through actions such as boycotts and strikes.  They also studied five individuals who made a positive impact on their communities, making Mr. Espinoza's real-life experiences especially meaningful for our students.
