You've got a friend in me!
Howdy partner, how do you motivate students to do hard things? Explain the mission with humor and engagement. Hannum School had an assembly with a play on Toy Story—To Proficiency and Beyond! On Tuesday, Mrs. Doornbos (Potato Head I) and Mrs. Franko (Potato Head II) gathered students together to kick off Operation IAR testing for grades 3–5. IAR stands for Illinois Assessment of Readiness. Hannum Bears were given the mission. They know it helps the school community identify strengths and learning gaps. They know it can help determine planning for infinity and beyond. They also know strategies that can help them a Lotso.
Mrs. Doornbos explained the mission and then reviewed by asking the students about what was shared. Students who could answer the questions from her presentation, were selected for a fun student/teacher relay including inflatable Toy Story characters in costumes. Mr. Strickland was Ham, Mrs. Zweig was Alien and Mrs. Paluch was Rex. Additional teachers in the relay were — Mrs. McAuliffe (2nd), Mrs. Wartman (1st), and Miss Tully (K). Just for the record, Alien and Miss Tully came in first place!
Students will receive punch cards each day for taking their time, using scratch paper, and have necessary materials each day. If they get all of their "punches" for the day, they are given a goody bag. If they get all of their punches for the entire testing period, they will get to watch the reward movie once testing ends.
Hannum students are on their way to showing what they know and rocketing to proficiency and beyond!!! Reach for the sky Hannum Bears!
