Neurodiversity Week Aims to Show All Brains are Unique

Kindergarten students participating in Neurodiversity Spirit Week-Magnificent Minds and What's in Your Toolbox?

Hannum School celebrated Neurodiversity Week to celebrate the strengths of individuals who may have autism, ADHD, dyslexia, or dyspraxia.  The goal of this week is to shift from thinking that these individuals have deficits or difficulties and celebrating their strengths instead.  Approximately 15-20% of the population has a neurological difference. Despite a specific label, no two people are the same and it may look different for each person.  Famous people with such conditions are: Billie Elish (Tourette's), Justin Timberlake (ADHD/OCD) and the famous Olympian gymnast, Simone Biles (ADHD).  Hannum students celebrated with theme days to teach about each aspect of neurodiversity: Monday-Magnificent Minds (wear a hat), Tuesday-What's in Your Toolbox? (bring a fidget to school), Wednesday-What's Your Superpower? (celebrate your abilities and areas of opportunity for growth), Thursday-Comfortable with Who I Am (wear workout clothes), and Friday-Neurodiversity Shirt-(bright colors).  Shoutout to all our Bears who joined in every spirit day and showed that our differences truly make us stronger!
