Fifth grade students performing Rock Around the Clock with ukuleles.
In tribute to America's 250th birthday this July 4th, Mrs. Hemminger and Mrs. Glikis selected songs that celebrated both American roots music and popular music from the 50s, 60s, and 70s.
The concert opened with Hannum's 4th–5th grade chorus performing, The Star Spangled Banner. Students also performed a lively jazz piece titled I Like to Sing (Scat) which introduced the audience to "scat" singing useful playful nonsense syllables. Fifth grade students continued the patriotic theme with When Johnny Comes Marching Home, a tribute to returning Civil War soldiers. Students used drums, xylophones, and bells to create the feel of a marching band. Their second selection, Rock Around the Clock, paid tribute to the music of the 1950's, and featured students accompanying the song on ukuleles.
Fourth grade students opened their set with Erie Canal, a classic American folksong written in 1905. Students accompanied the piece using xylophones, bells, and rhythm sticks. They also performed the classic rock anthem We Will Rock You by Queen, featuring student recorder performances inspired by the music of the 1970s.
Finally, our third grade students played three selections: We are Good Musicians, Aquarium from The Carnival of Animals and the 1960s favorite Peppermint Twist. Students added movement and scarves to enhance their performance, bringing energy and fun to the stage.
As always, we thank Mrs. Hemminger and Mrs. Glikis for their hard work and dedication in coordinating such an interactive and entertaining concert for our Hannum School Community. Bravo to all!
