A Decade of Service

A Decade of Service

The 10th annual Feed 6 event was held last Saturday, December 9th! OLHMS community members, including some incredible OLHMS scholars and their parents, took time out of their busy schedules to give back to the local community. Over 100 volunteers piled in the OLHMS gymnasium bright and early Saturday morning to pack over 30,000 meals for local food pantries, churches, veteran organizations, and homeless shelters.

8th grader, Juliette, reflected on her experience at Feed 6: "My favorite thing about volunteering  is helping people and knowing that it is going to be very beneficial and it's going for a good cause.”

One of the main items packed during this event is nutrient-high macaroni and cheese. Volunteers were asked to follow specific measurements and weights when packing and sealing the food. This was to ensure that each serving of macaroni and cheese had proper nutritional value. All volunteers were careful to make sure they were following these guidelines. Mia, current 8th grader at OLHMS, explained how well her team worked together: "I like how my team was really fast workers and I love how we connected and made a great team. When there was a problem we all talked and fixed the problem. We had and  just had the best time and they were so nice and I had a great time with them. I hope I can get to do that more often.”

This is the 10th year Mrs. McCarthy has worked with District 123 and Feed 6 to bring this service opportunity to the community. Volunteers are separated into different teams with each person having a specific task for packaging the food. OLHMS 7th grader, Loai, shared, "I think the best thing about Feed 6 was that the community came together to pack food for the less fortunate."

Overall, all volunteers seemed to have a great time Saturday morning! Feed 6 was very grateful for D123’s contribution of over 30,000 meals. It’s a great day to be a Mustang!

"Something I liked best about volunteering at the Feed 6 event was seeing the amount of people who came and their enjoyment in doing so. The communication between me, my table, and others showed much merriment and I will be volunteering again in the future! "- Malak, OLHMS 8th grader.
